Primordial Black Hole Collision

On the 21st of May 2019 our gravitational observatories detected the so far most massive gravitational event known as GW190521. And some theorize that this might have been a collision of primordial black holes.

The large global team of gravitational astronomers from LIGO/Virgo collaboration announced in September of 2020 that we detected gravitation waves that came from the so far most massive collision of two objects. The event called GW190521 took place on the 21st May of 2019 and interested many to hypothesize.

The most common hypothesis is that it was a collision of two black holes. But at the very minimum, the bigger of the two hypothesized black holes that collided would be a bit problematic as the hypothesis claims it was black holes with a mass of 85 and 66 Sun respectively that collided. This would create a black hole with a mass of 142 Suns and the remaining mass of 9 Suns was radiated as gravitational waves.

So, what’s the problem? The pair-instability supernova theory predicts “banned” masses for stellar-size black holes and the larger black hole should have exactly that mass. So, Antonio Riotto and his colleagues from the Université de Genève analyzed the data from the event and come with another more exotic alternative.

They claim it could have been a collision of black holes that weren’t created by the collapse of massive stars but instead a collision of primordial black holes that should be the remains of the very young universe. And primordial black holes do easily go around the problem with “banned” masses of black holes from the supernova theory.

What needs to be said is that primordial black holes are, so far, completely hypothetical. And truthfully, we aren’t really that persuaded of the existence. Nonetheless, they do still have their fans.

Cannot wait for the first gravitational waves surfing board. Although I do realize that I might be getting just a little bit ahead of myself. hehehe
