South Korea or the Republic of Korea is located in East Asia, precisely in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula which juts from the eastern end of the mainland towards the Yellow Sea. South Korea's northern boundary is marked by the 238 km long Demilitarized Zone which is also the border with its sister North Korea. The capital city of South Korea is Seoul.

The first travelers to come to Korea said Korea was like a sea with great strong winds due to the large number of mountains that traverse the entire peninsula. North Korea generally has the highest average mountain and the Hallasan Volcanic Cone (1,950 m) is in Jeju. The Taebaek, Sobaek and Jiri Massif mountains are the three main mountains in South Korea.

Unlike Japan or the northern provinces of China, the Korean Peninsula has geological stability without active volcanoes or major fault lines.

Over the centuries, Koreans have removed most of Korea's ancient forests except for a few remote areas in the mountains. As the use of firewood as an energy source has decreased since the 1960s, reforestation activities were successfully carried out in the 1980s and made South Korea green again. South Korea does not have a large land area, mountain abrasion has created a lowland. About 30 percent of South Korea is made up of lowlands with the rest being highlands and mountains. Most of the low-lying areas are located along the coast, especially on the west coast and along major rivers.

The Han River Plain surrounds Seoul, the Byeongtaek Plateau to the southwest of Seoul, the Geum River Valley, the Nakdong River Valley and the Yeongsan Plateau and the Honam Plateau to the southwest form important lowlands. The narrower lowlands stretch along the east coast.

The longest river in South Korea, the Nakdong, stretches 521 km. The Han River that divides Seoul stretches for 514 km while the Geum River stretches for 401 km. Other major rivers including the Imjin flow through North and South Korea and form an estuary with the Han River. Bukhan which is a tributary of the Han River also flows out of North Korea. The main river flows from north to south or east to west and empties into the Yellow Sea or the Korea Strait.
