Custom Figurines - Female Basketball Player - Part 1

in #hobby6 years ago (edited)

This will end up being a rather long post if all together so I am breaking it into a couple of posts Check out Part 2 here: https://steemit.com/hobby/@bigskycustoms/custom-figurines-female-basketball-player-part-2 and Part 3 here: https://steemit.com/hobby/@bigskycustoms/custom-figurines-female-basketball-players-part-3-finish. I am going to go into a bit more detail than I usually do and include some of the steps in the process. This was an order for 2 custom figurines of the same lady, first in her high school uniform and the second in her college uniform. Veronica Shaw played high school basketball at Mountain Pointe High School in the Phoenix area.

After a stellar high school career, she went on to play at San Diego State University.

Starting out
When I start a project I work with the customer and find a pose (or two in this case) that is workable for the project. Since there are no female basketball action figures that work for what I do, I have to convert McFarlane male players into females. This requires finding heads that work also.

The Michonne figure from the Walking Dead (7") figures was released about a year or so ago and the head size is pretty close to being right for matching the Mcfarlane poses. This is one of the few female African American heads that appeared to be work about for this project. She selected two poses, and we ended up having to switch one later during the process.

She chose an Allen Iverson pose for the Mt Pointe figure.

We settled on Jason Terry for the SDSU pose.

Modifications
To achieve the look of a female, I like to reduce the musculature of the male figures, I also like to use the neck connection of the male head if I can, so I did a face swap on the two heads with the MIchonne face>

In the picture above, I have removed the Iverson face and glued on the Michonne face. The head band was going to stay on the figure which also helped with the face swap.

A lot of the time the hands on the males are too large, so on the Iverson pose I did a hand swap (the hands on the Terry Pose were ok with some minor sanding). This entails cutting the hand off and pinning a new hand to the arm.

You can see I have reduced the size of the arm muscles using a dremel sanding drum tool. I also had to remove a sleeve that was on the original figure. I will later build the arms back up using sculpting putty.

I also didn't like the shoes on the Iverson figure as they didn't have laces and I needed laces, plus they were bigger than what I wanted so I did a swap with another set of shoes, again, cutting and pinning.

Another adjustment I will do is shorten the arms and legs if needed. the Iverson legs and arms were ok, but I did shorten the Terry arms (but not the legs). Again cutting a thin section out of the bicep and the forearm and pinning with sanding and putty work to hide the match point.

Sculpting Features
She wanted a knee brace and patella band on the SDSU figure, plus arm bands. The Terry base figure had one arm band so I added the second, sculpted the knee brace and patella band using Apoxie Sculpt putty. I sanded off the high socks and made shorter ones also.

And she wanted the uniform taped together at the top of the jersey, which requiured some dremel work and putty work to form the tape.

Lastly I had to sculpt her hair to match a tight weave on the top with a pony tail (see Part 2 for the pony tail discussion).

This completed Part 1 of 2 for this subject. Please check out Part 2 which will follow shortly.

Thanks for following me and my custom figurines. I love feedback so please comment.

Amazing work! I found your posts a little over a week ago and have been hoping you would do a post showing the detailed process. It is so cool to see how you get it done. I especially like the face swap step. The finished product looks really good. Thank you for sharing your talents.

I might suggest at some point you go in and edit this one to link to Part 2 and 3. Just be careful because editing can eat up your bandwidth if you are below about 40SP.

Thanks for the advice on linking the other two parts and thanks for your comments, appreciate them!

Amazed by the detail that you put into your work!

Thank you, parts 2 and 3 are posted now also.

Wow. Now this is what I am talking about. So glad I asked you to post on this process, this is absolutely fascinating! I have to say the face swap photo is kind of haunting and creepy though LOL. The level of attention to detail you show in this process is really impressive. I bet you absolutely make people so happy when they get the final product. What a cool thing!

Thanks Carl, I generally don't take pictures and i know I should during the work. I need to start doing it more.

Hey @bigskycustoms. I'm so happy to see your post received a curie upvote!! Glad you continued to use our #newbieresteemday tag. We can't always get to everyone, but @randomwanderings is a member of our Newbie Resteem team. I'm happy to see that he followed you and kept an eye out for talent on here.

Congratulations! btw, it's @beeyou. :) I'm part of the curation team on this account when I have some free time to come help.

Thanks, @beeyou, I am trying to just use the newbieresteemday only on my hobby posts, and I will have a couple more coming pretty soon. I just haven't finished very many lately.

It is amazing that you create these life-like figurines. I am very impressed! I really enjoy reading your story of how you come up with these magnificent pieces. Thanks for sharing with us!

Happy you are using the newbieresteemday tag on your hobby posts. I try to keep up when I can, but others can help if I'm not here. :)

thanks again, it was great to get that much action on the Part 1 post, and Part 2 did as well, but not nearly the $$ and then part 3 was totally ignored and that is where the good pictures of the finished products were!!! And of course I haven't seen any thing close since then on any other posts, but I am hoping I will still generate enough interest with future posts. I am struggling with what Tags to use also.

My advice, give it some time between posts if you are writing a part 1,2,3, etc..maybe a week? Plus, share a good story. Like you did here. You can write about your triumphant moments, frustrations, accidents, list goes on.

I'm not a curator by any means, but from what I've noticed from other posts that receive a curie vote, curie don't usually give another upvote to the same author right away. Some not even again..just my little observation. That's why I say to spread your posts and share some long stories! Make it personal. :) My two cents. (beeyou is a group account so we will never receive a curie vote. That's why I can share my two cents without any underlying agenda)

Gotcha, thanks for the advice

just a heads up, i just posted a new custom figurine and I did use the newbieresteemday tag

Great job! I was hoping to see more of your hobby posts. Your beer posts are great, but your talents are definitely worth showing off.

Congratulations you have been resteemed as part of #newbieresteemday's top posts for the day! We invite you to use our tag to connect with more of our members. To learn more: Come Join Us!!! (Newbie Resteem Initiative)

thank you for the resteem. I wish the other two parts would have gotten as much action as this one, maybe I should have made one large post rather than 3 separate parts. I was well received though, so pretty happy about that. My son spent some SPD to promote it also.
