Before there were stress balls and fidget spinners...

in #hobby6 years ago

...We had pens.

To be exact, instead of using specialty products to keep our fidgety hands busy, we spun pens around our fingers.

As it turns out, this pencil spinning trick was actually a thing, and there are competitions where contestants spun pencils between their fingers using various techniques. The one show above (performed by yours truly btw) is called the "thumbaround" and "reverse thumbaround" because the pencil was spun back and forth around the thumb (duh!).

In fact, in Japan there is a Pen Spinning Association, because of course there is.

Are you a pen spinner?

Use to do this a lot back in high school, specially when nervous before quizzes and exams. lol

Hmmmm Pen Spinning Association, Japan really thinks of the strangest things.

I used to do this as a kid a lot and carried it over as an adult.

I've long decided to give up trying to figure out Japan, and just enjoy their exports

Interesting. I didn't ever spin pens or pencils on my thumb. Looks like you're pretty good at it!

Nowadays I type more than I write, so it's a way to keep my fingers nimble I guess.

Oh my god! I had friends that would do this in exams... It is incredibly annoying!

Why is it annoying? haha I do it all the time in school.

Are you still spinning?

Of course, don't let the spinning stop!

Nice to see a Steemian spinner here.
I recently came back to it, building my own mods now.
