2 Minutes with the Farmer: Good Mineral Program for Livestock a MUST!!!

in #homesteading6 years ago

Today on 2 Minutes with the Farmer we are talking about mineral programs for your livestock. We do not feed many supplements to our cattle but one supplement we do not skimp on is a high quality mineral. Each area of the country will have different mineral needs. Here in Central Kentucky the University has established a formula to get all the minerals our livestock needs.

Thank you for spending 2 minutes with me!

Wow!
Have you tasted the minerals?
I've heard of salt licks and that wouldn't really surprise me if you used a regular salt lick but it's interesting you have to be so specific.
I've heard us humans are magnesium deficient and perhaps iodine deficient.
I have also heard that apes change their diets around when they don't feel well so they get better but a lot of humans do not do that.

Cattle will do the same thing. They will eat different things to try and get the vitamins and minerals they need.

No I have never tried them. Will have to never thought of it.

There is so may things you need to do to be a farmer there. Now, the mineral feeder. So, how does it work? The cows eat the mineral from the mineral feeder? You must've many mineral feeders for all the cows, otherwise they will compete to each other if there is too little mineral feeder. I think so haha

We keep one mineral feeder per herd. We keep minerals on them all the time. That way they do not fight over them but just walk up get a few licks then leave for the next cow

We have been experimenting with different minerals.
Currently researching treating the grass. Not sure though.
We for the most part are a grass op but supplement with a little grain in the winter. We lost 4 calves last winter in the cold. On the vets advice we started feeding corn to help them take the cold.

Ya out west I know it is a different game with the cold. It just never gets really cold here in Kentucky

howdy sir Farmer! dang dtube wouldn't play tonight but thankfully you wrote what it was about and if the video didn't show calves then it was worthless anyway!

No calves in this on. Just some old cows;)

Good advice.

Its great to see your happy and healthy herd. :D Good tip for everyone, as you say each area has certain minerals that are lacking or overly abundant and they need a good balance. :D What is the big yellow and red thing behind the cows at 2:43?
God bless you and your wonderful family. :D Have an awesome day my fabulous friend! :D

Thank you for watching. The red and yellow things are automatic water tanks.

Always my pleasure to come visit and see what you've got to going on. :D Oh very cool, how do you refill them? Does it get cold enough to freeze the water in them there? We have tubs in a couple pastures with hoses running to them and a couple of hoses that lead back up to a tap on the outside of the house, which is great during spring, summer, and fall, but not so great in the winter, we have to lug water buckets during winter months, so we're always looking for something to help with the watering process. :D
God bless you and your wonderful family. :D Have an awesome day my fabulous friend! :D

We have had underground piping that keeps them full. They will freeze if it gets really cold. But it doesn’t get very cold here in KY. If it is going to get cold I will put a long burning candle down in the ground by where the water line comes up. This has worked great. Have a wonderful day!!

Very smart, we've spoken about doing something similar, just waiting on time and finances to come together. :D I wonder if the long burning candle idea would work here after we've finally got it in place, it can get into the mid -30's C or lower here some times, thankfully not for long periods normally though.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. :D
God bless you and your wonderful family. :D Have an awesome day my fabulous friend! :D
