Feeding the Homestead

in #homesteading5 years ago (edited)

So today I spent a good amount of time feeding and checking the worm bins that in exchange feed our gardens and even our pastures with worm tea which feeds our livestock. Homestead circle of life. I start off with a couple of trash cans of food waste for my worm bins like these.

I feed half of the top of my worm wigwams, which are CFT worm bins, at a time to keep an area of the worms to go and then tomorrow I will cover the food scraps with shredded boxes.

I have 3 of these wigwams and I guess around 800 lbs of finished castings in each one right now since I have been harvesting my other bins most the winter and allowed these to fill completely. These produce a good amount of finished 1/12th sifted castings for sale and also all the castings we could need for ourselves. It also allows use to brew batches of worm tea to spray on the pens and padlocks between rotations to help improve the quality and growth.

Lots of worms also.

Any extra waste goes to the livestock or into the compost we produce for ourselves. With all the manure and hay waste around the homestead we never have a shortage of composting materials.
