This vlog was shot on the site of a future food forest. We are planning to plant hundreds of edible and otherwise useful trees, shrubs and herbs here mimicking a natural forest’s layers and diversity. This is a long-term plan that takes massive vision and foresight.
It takes a keen eye to see the potential and visualize the future. It also takes some faith.
As I walk through this piece of our land, I see a cacophony of growth, diversity of species and plant structures.
How do we transition this to a thriving human designed ecosystem that provides fruits, nuts, fungi, vegetables and medicines in a sustainable manner? The first step is always observation.
The first 2 years I got to witness the land throughout the seasons. I've done assessment and analysis of the site but taking note of species present, state of succession and soil quality. This sets me up to begin the design process and implementing slow simple small actions over a period of time.
The key here is having the long-term vision in mind as consistent actions are taken towards achieving the goal. We believe in a brighter future, and are willing to work hard to make our dreams come true. We would love to pass on a living legacy of abundance.
We are in it for the long haul and shaping the future takes dedication. We may not see major yields for years to come, but we trust that our efforts will pay off.
Part of the beauty of this vision is embracing the journey and letting go of strong attachments to the outcome. We have already learned a lot since moving onto the homestead, and have grown a lot as people in the process. Not everything goes according to plan. Plants die and mistakes are made, but if we are always learning we’re on track. There are both lean years and years of plenty, but in the end it all balances out.

We've been saving this area for last as it has the richest soil. Super excited to get underway, many trees and shrubs are already ordered.
Excellent that you have good soil to begin with. How big of area is it and what kind of trees and scrubs did you order?
You have it so right when you say that observation is the first important step and well done on taking 2 years to really observe and get to know the land, to see how it changes and now to really trust in the process. Once you have the design in place and the right combination of trees and plants it is then in natures hands and yes so years will probably be better then others but it will balance out. I can definitely see a food forest in that spot, how lucky you both are to have such an amazing plot and how lucky the land is to have you both xx
YEs to trusting the process. I know I'll make plenty of mistakes, but I've been focused on food foresting for many years and one thing I've heard OVER and OVER again is not to space plants too closely.
In nature's hands indeed, although we will certainly work to create momentum in the right direction :). We do our best and step back and wait...

Time energy, money. Not to mentioned a propensity to take on A LOT... Hopefully it will provide a good example for others. And there will be a tonne of food to share and introduce folks to the potential of this bioregion.

Giddyup! This will be a game changer as before we're make biochar from brush and are planning on hugeling with the pole wood. I'm stoked cause I'm leaning to biomass on top rather than burying it. Yippee!!!
these PTO driven chippers are worth renting for even for a day.....IMO. geez....you could make quick work of that place...in ONE DAY.
That looks great! Luckily for me there is a group locally that bought a mega chipper with a grant. I could have it on site for s short while and get some biomass shredded! It can chip up to 8", so we are planning a work party to make fungal food ;)

I see it! Wow, what a great spot! All that tree and brush life is sure to have an amazing fungal support system already. I'm sure it'll bloom for you when you go to chipping and hugeling like you describe to @rawutah!
We just started laying a foundation for our small food forest yesterday with our first swale. More to come soon too!
