LATE NIGHT WITH PAPA-PEPPER - GUINEA GONE BROODY

in #homesteading6 years ago

What do you do when your Guinea Fowl lays some eggs out in the open and starts to sit on them?

We were hoping that our Guinea Fowl would produce some more Guinea Fowl eventually by themselves, so I've just been letting them lay and build up an egg supply in random places. These are are more "free range" birds, since they rarely stay in the pen, so they lay a lot of eggs in random places out in the open. Last night, one finally began to sit on a clutch of eggs.

HOW WE KEPT HER SAFE

When we found the Guinea Fowl hen on the nest, we were excited! If she can hatch some of these out for us, that means that we will have some more Guineas, and this time for free. However, this nest is out in the open next to a building. Foxes, Raccoons, and Opossums all have access to this area, so we had to come up with a way to protect her, and her eggs.

We are currently using almost all of our chicken and rabbit "tractors," but the neighbors had one available that we could use. Since this one has an open bottom, we thought that we could just lift it and put it over the top of her and her eggs. The @little-peppers were even able to carry this one over there on their own!

Ever so carefully, we just set the pen over the top of the hen. Sure enough, it was a good fit with room to spare. Now she will be safe during the night and able to sit on her eggs in peace!

The @little-peppers made sure to give her plenty of food and water too, just in case. We will see how this works, but so far she's safe. Hopefully we will have some baby keats before this is all over!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Opossums are rarely found in this part of the world. I guess they're one of the endangered species. Wow.. Great to know they are reading found in your clime.

I always love to go through your publications and see how you give that beautiful education to your children about nature and how to live from it, your education is very exemplary when I have my children I hope to be like your friend has taught me the true meaning of nature and some animals like snakes that I thought were terrifying but now I see them with different eyes. As always your Venezuelan friend a hug for you

Very nice! Glad to hear that you appreciate it!

Wow...cool
Brooding time is on.
There's joy when your animals lay eggs or birth young ones.
Keep up papa!

sweet baby
