How to make your own cheap, easy, non-toxic furniture cleaner!

A safe, non-toxic lifestyle

Time flies, man. It's been two months since I wrote my recipe for an Edible Furniture Polish, great for using in old or unfinished wooden furniture. At the end, I hinted I use another mix just for cleaning and conditioning finished and recent wood. This is by far the one I use the most for day-to-day cleaning.

But before anything else... Why should you use this homemade stuff?

  • First, because it's cheaper. Take a look at the maths below and see for yourself.
  • Second, because it's safer. Most furniture polishes are filled with harmful chemicals to give them longer shelf lives and be cheaper to manufacture, while masking the damage instead of cleaning it.

  • And last but not least, because they're less harmful. If those chemicals would kill if you swallow them, imagine the damage they make to the environment. We're contaminating our water, poisoning our fish, and soon we'll have no natural resources for our own survival.

Get ready!

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoon olive oil (the one you use for cooking)
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • Lemon juice or food-grade essencial lemon oil
  • Water (distilled, preferably)
  • A spray bottle

Shake it up!

Yeah, you'll need to shake this bottle often since (as you know from school) olive oil and water don't really like each other. But other than that, it's a great cleaning tool even for dust mopping.

  • Put the olive oil in the spray bottle and add 20 drops of essencial oil. You can use lemon juice but unlike the edible furniture polish this recipe is prone to spoil in the bottle because it has a lot of water (that's why I use the distilled water). So lemon juice will make the trick but don't expect it to survive a lot, even if you keep it on the refrigerator.
  • Add the vinegar and fill the bottle with the water.

  • Shake and try on hidden wooden parts (such as legs) before using it. If your wood is old, weak or unfinished, it will react to the water. You need to condition it first with the edible furniture polish. You can also use this recipe and add more olive oil.

And the best... You can also eat it!

The spray makes it very easy to sprinkle on a salad. But the water will dilute the mix so you won't be tasting much of it... Anyway, you understand my point: it's so safe you can eat this shit.

Great idea. To think in the old days they'd make stuff like this as a matter of course!! I always try to make my own cleaners. I just woke my stuff with a damp cloth and a beeswax for wooden furniture. This one looks like it would SMELL good too!

Yeah you could even leave the lemon juice/essencial oil out of it :) It smells great just like that!

I like projects like these, that preserves the planet, well done.

Thank you!

thank you for share your good idea
