Osmanlı devletinin yükselme dönemi hükümdarlarıdan biri olan Yavuz sultan selim 1512-1520 yılları arasında osmanlıyı yönetmiştir.
Tarihçilerin şu ifadeside dikkat çekmektedir. 8 yıla 80 yıllık iş sığdırmış padişah. gerçektende öyle bir çok iş yapmıştır hükümdarlığı boyunca. Başarılı savaşları arasında çaldıran savaşı, mercidabık savaşı, ridaniye savaşları vardır.
Halifelik onun döneminde Osmanlı ya geçmiştir, baharat yolunu da osmanlı devletine kazandırmıştır.
Son olarakta şöyle bir vasiyette bulunmuştur.
Kim ki torunlarımdan hazineyi benim kadar doldurursa kapılar onun mührüyle, dolduramazsa benim mührümle mühürlenmeye devam etsin. demiştir
