~~ Review of ‘Hotel Artemis’ ~~

hotel artemis.pngI had next to no expectations for ‘Hotel Artemis’, other than that it looked like something I’d like but also could fall flat on its face for the same reasons. Idiosyncratic characters brought together in close quarters that could result in a powder keg of violence? It’s either gonna explode or fizzle out, and thankfully it explodes. Not in epic fashion, but it explodes all the same.

For those that are fans of ‘John Wick’ and the idea of the Continental Hotel being a safe haven for assassins, it’s not hard to see the Hotel Artemis as existing in the same universe, with these secret hospitals scattered about. We are told criminals go through a screening process, have to keep up on their dues, and membership is not a foregone conclusion. While in the care of the Artemis, guests are to behave by a set of rules which as one points out, is kinda strange for a personality type that is explicitly making their living by breaking rules.

The most violent riot Los Angeles has seen has broken out, and a bank robber is using the chaos of the city to pull off a large score. Injuries are sustained, sending him to the Artemis which is run by ‘Nurse’ and her attendant ‘Everest’. Everyone in the movie has code names, guests are determined by the theme room they stay in. Other guests include an arms dealer and a master assassin, and trying to make it in time before the last room is taken, is the kingpin of the city who happens to also own the Artemis (but it’s first come first serve, even for him).

There is a wonderful sense of urgency to the movie, it all taking place over the course of one night. Every character is unique and has a story itching to be told, though not all get to tell it. This is yet another small budgeted film set slightly in the future, this one taking place all in one location. There is a gritty aesthetic to the look of the pic that only adds to the character of the hotel, rather than just being purely to “look cool”. It takes a while for the violence to finally pop, but once it does it is rather visceral and nicely shot. There’s also a dark sense of humor, often just barely poking its head out.

I can’t say I have any real complaints with ‘Hotel Artemis’, but on the same hand I can’t say it is a must see. It wears its aesthetic naturally as opposed to say how I felt something forced about ‘Atomic Blonde’, which just left me cold even as I acknowledged it had some really cool stuff in it. Artemis is lean, throws its entire budget at the screen, and is the type of movie you’ll be happy to ‘discover’ while flipping channels.
