Policed by a parrot!

in #humour5 years ago

My friend Ellen had her daughter’s parrot living with her while Sally was overseas studying for several months. Jezebel, an African Grey was a talker of note and could pick up accents and words with amazing alacrity.

Ellen was having problems with very high phone bills and was at her wits end trying to solve the problem.

She was unwell one working day and was lying on her bed when the phone rang. While she was shuffling through the living room to answer it she was amazed to hear her domestic worker’s voice greeting someone effusively. The strange thing was that her domestic, Sadie was away from work that particular day.
“Hellaw,” said Sadie’s heavily accented English. “Mirriam? Wait a minute and I’ll phone you back,” Sadie’s voice was emanating, to Ellen’s utter amazement, from the parrot’s cage!
After a brief delay of clicks and mumbling as Sadie dialled the number rather slowly, repeating the numbers carefully as she did so, Miriam obviously picked up the phone her side in the faraway homeland.

The conversation followed with the parrot giving an amazing guttural outpouring of speech in a foreign language complete with clicks and punctuated by “Eh’s” and “Seeeriouslee” characteristic of her domestic’s speech.

Ellen was mesmerised as she watched the parrot enjoy her close attention. After a LONG conversation Ellen exclaimed,
“Atta boy…………..You clever bird. I shall call you Inspector Clueso of Scotland yard from now on. You’ve solved what seemed to be impossible mystery for me!”

When Sadie arrived at work the following morning early, Ellen had arranged for her friend to phone her at that hour. Exactly as planned, when the parrot heard the phone ring and having seen Sadie come in through the door he launched into his learned speech.

Ellen watched Sadie’s face blanch with guilt but the terror that showed in her features as the parrot spoke in her voice, was because she was a highly superstitious person and believed that the bird was possessed by her spirit!

She resigned forthwith and at once and had to be persuaded with cups of hot tea that there was no black magic involved and if the excess of the phone bill was paid by Sadie then it would all come to an end.

Little did Sadie know that Sally, Ellen’s daughter had already returned from her stay overseas and was coming to fetch her precious parrot that very evening.

No one in that house at least would have to listen to Sadie speaking through the medium of a parrot ever again!
