Blockshipping - Transforming the Global Shipping Industry (An Overview)

The Danish merchant fleet has increased slightly with 22 vessels since October 2016. The combined gross tonnage has however reached a plateau. Container vessels represents the largest share in gross tonnage, through tankers and offshore vessels have the largest amount of vessels. The Danish shipping industry is non-arguably one of the largest seafaring industry in the world.
The Danish shipping industry has secured a leading international position in maritime technology and are also planning to secure a leading international position on blockchain technology.
This project is going to bring together Danish shipping expertise and the Danish blockchain expertise in a project called The Global Shared Container Platform (GSCP).

The Problem
The slow growth in world trade has marked the shipping industry resulting in overcapacity, leaving a large number of vessels in overcapacity, leaving a large number of vessels to be recycled. This industry is also faced with the problem of security threats, environmental regulations and low rates.

The Purpose
The GSCP platform is to provide a blockchain enabled ship registry where inventory of containers and their current locations are recorded using the platform

The Solution
The GSCP platform is going to bring about an highly system in the global handling of containers thereby solving most of the problems in the container shipping industry.

The Technology
The blockchain-based GSCP platform will enable a wide range of industry stakeholders, terminal operators, and transportation companies to achieve cost savings and reduced container inventories based on real- time information exchange. The technology offers real-time visibility and blockchain enabled smart contracts that automate processes and payments between parties.
This enables all parties to signicantly reduce internal control/admin functions (costs).
