Blockshipping: Transforming The Global Container Shipping Industry

The international shipping industry accounts for up to 90% of the world import and export trade. The economic importance of the shipping industry to the world economy is most evident when compared to road and air transportation this is because, container shipping is cheaper, safer, best suited for moving big volumes of cargo and the most eco-friendly means of transporting goods across the globe. The concern has been that given its scale and rapid growth, the shipping industry if left unchecked could go on to cause more environmental degradations.


The shipping industry account for approximately 3.1% of annual global CO2 and approximately 2.8% of annual Green House Gas emission and these figures are expected to rise in the coming years if no action is taken. An increase in the amount of CO2 and NOx in the environment result in excess greenhouse gas which is the major cause of global warming. Elevated levels of Nitrogen Oxide is the cause of different respiratory diseases and when they combine with Oxides of Sulphur they form smog and acid rain.

Leveraging on Blockchain disruptive technology, Blockshipping has created a Global Shared Container Platform (GSCP) based on Blockchain technology that will significantly reduce the global container emissions.

The GSCP platform will employ grey box strategy which will allow for container sharing between different carriers, this will greatly reduce the number of empty vessels and also through street-turn/triangulation strategy, containers will be moved directly from local consigners back to local shippers instead of moving the empty containers to the shipping terminal before being returned to the shippers. In effect, these strategies will reduce the number of truck trips which will reduce the amount of gas emitted by the shipping industry. It has been estimated that through GSCP the amount of CO2 emission will be reduced up to 4.6 million tons per year and NOx emission by 4,900 tons yearly.
