Death sentence of a female rapist in India

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to death by a court in India for the rape of a seven-month-old baby.

The judge ruled Rajasthan.

This is the first death sentence issued in the state after the authorities amended the law on the protection of children from sexual offenses.

Activists welcomed the verdict, saying it would represent a legal precedent for similar cases.

The sentence may be appealed to the Supreme Court.

One hundred cases of rape are reported in India every day, but only a small number of perpetrators are convicted.
