  Hello Friends,

Today I would like to enlighten you all about the significance of an art, which is common to all the Indian festivals. The art of Rangoli is a phenomenon so vibrant with different hues combined together in geographical patterns. Did you know there are scientific and metaphysical phenomenon’s attached to this art? I am sure all those who have witnessed a Rangoli might have experienced a calming effect on you; do you know why is that so?? Let me deconstruct these theories for you. But first, let me brief you a little about what Rangoli is and how it is made?

  What is a Rangoli?

The Rangoli is an Indian art of colors; the colors used are basically in form of colorful powder. The word Rangoli is derived from two words ‘Rang’ which means color and ‘Holi' which means celebration. It is a celebration of different hues; the various colors are laid on the surface in geometric patterns. A Rangoli is typically made of powdered colors but in recent times it has acquired a dynamic form with flowers, paints etc. used to make a Rangoli.

This art has a long history of evolution; the art goes back to thousands of years. In India, every region has evolved its own form of Rangoli. Initially, it was simple graphic patterns drawn with lines but later colors were added to it. The alpana designs are pre-cursor of a Rangoli. An important feature of a Rangoli is symmetry in its patterns, it would appear same from all sides. A Rangoli is typically drawn at the entrance of a house.

  Science & Rangoli

According to neuro-science human brain responds to visual pattern and the various patterns have different impact on a brain. The geometric patterns and colors stimulate the brain in a varied manner. It impacts neural circuitry and emotions. A Rangoli has a calming effect on a person who sees it due its geometric patterns and colors that stimulates brain waves of the viewers in a calming manner. Thus the importance of this art is embedded in the science of vibration patterns.

It is due to this science that it is drawn on festivals and occasions. The purpose of this art is to provide peace and joy to the guest when they enter and leave the house. It has a deep social message, where all the colors stand for different personalities but they are tied together in a pattern emphasizing on symmetry that stands for equality. The colors are a symbol of solidarity as every color stands for specific character. It is similar to the metaphor of a rainbow where though there are seven colors but they all are combined together to form the white color that stands for peace.

Rangoli is not just a beautiful art of colors but it has deep significance shrouded in its scientific and social significance that makes it auspicious It is drawn on every occasion to celebrate happiness, peace, and solidarity.

Are rangolis limited to special occasions and festivals or do people make them regularly as well

They are a daily affair in many household where the lady of the house would draw it in the morning at the entrance. It aims to provide a tranquil aura to the house especially the entrance.

Nice! My daughters love making it on Diwali though :)

Nicely explained. So it's based on the concept of feng shui.

feng shui i think has a more of mythical importance. That is close to astronomical science but this is neuro-logical science.
