Blocked Applications and Sites By Ministry of Communications and Information Republic of Indonesia (KOMINFO)
The Ministry of Communications and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia (KOMINFO) decided to temporarily block Tik Tok's phenomenal application, Tuesday, July 3, 2018. Responding to various negative aspects made Kominfo take firm steps against the platform.
Apparently not just Tik Tok, Kominfo has also blocked apps and sites containing pornographic content, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT), prostitution and online gambling, religious harassment to radicalism and terrorism.
Here's a list of phenomenal apps and sites, both ever and still, blocked by Kominfo;
Tumblr
Yahoo's subsidiary has been subverted by Kominfo around February 2016. Not without reason, blocking Tumblr related to the content of pornography and LGBT.
Because blocking gets strong user protests, so blocking is only valid for a few days. Tumblr promises to conduct self-censorship of the incoming content on its platform.
Bigo Live
This live streaming video application has also felt the 'sting' of Kominfo because it contains pornographic content. Bigo was blocked on December 1, 2016.
At that time Kominfo only blocked Domain Name System (DNS) only, not including IP Address. This makes the Bigo Live application still accessible with features that can not be used.
Bigo Live suspension lasts for one month. They are committed to obey the rules in Indonesia.
Not half, they even opened a branch office in Indonesia. Now the filtering machine belongs to the platform from China was also used Kominfo to help the performance of the Internet Sensor Machine to more quickly filter the negative content.
Vimeo
Tifatul Sembiring, who still occupied the Menkominfo seat, once blocked Vimeo's application on May 9, 2014. Initially, Vimeo had time to protest, but eventually promised to screen the pornographic content.
However, until now there has been no real step done Vimeo. As a result, Vimeo is still suspended by Kominfo for not wanting to control the spread of pornographic content.
Online discussion forums that have systems such as Kaskus also become one among several applications that are blocked.
Shortly after Vimeo, Kominfo also helped overthrow Reddit because of his discussion topic on pornographic content.
The discussion on pornographic content is also supported by images, text, and pornographic hyperlinks that all Reddit users can see in Indonesia.
Just like Vimeo, the platform from the United States is still not able to access in Indonesia.
Giphy
Giphy websites and apps were also subverted by Kominfo on August 24, 2017. Blocking was done because the platform contained online gambling ads that could affect the public.
After cleaning for one month duration, now Giphy can be accessed as before.
Telegram
If other platforms are blocked due to pornography, it is different with Telegram. Having a strict encryption, Telegram is filled with content of terrorism, radicalism, and the spread of hate toward a country.
Kominfo only subvert its 11 DNS only, so that users can still access Telegram applications but can not use the web version.
In particular, Telegram's CEO, Pavel Durov, came to Indonesia to reform. The discussions directly conducted by Menkominfo Rudiantara make Telegram again accessible on August 10, 2017.
Grindr, Blued, and BoyAhoy
All three dating applications are involved in cases of same-sex pornography or LGBT, as well as online prostitution cases that sell children.
All three are considered to damage the morale of the nation, so the government filed a blocking to internet providers on September 15, 2016.
Imgur
Search sites and viral photo sharing like meme, Imgur, have also been blocked by Kominfo. The reason is still related to the existence of pornographic content on its platform.
It could be said Imgur suspended for a long time, but now the site can already be re-used.
4chan
4chan is a platform that has similarities with Imgur. Through 4chan, users can search and share viral photos on the internet
Initially, this platform is only used to share visual manga and anime only. However, over time, various pornographic images and content meet 4chan.
4chan became increasingly famous for participating in spreading nude photos of famous actress Jennifer Lawrence US in 2014. Until now 4chan still experienced suspension in Indonesia.
