The only way to solve our water problem is drastic depopulation or massive energy inputs. In either case, it looks bad for the rest of the environment and will create more problems. Overpopulation issues are also primarily an energy problem (whether it is not enough or too much waste, etc) Therefore I like to think that we are actually in an energy crisis anyway you look at it. Bottom line is we need cheap and clean and abundent energy or we need to dramatically change our lives and our world.
Some proper management is the solution, with empathy for all living beings, as opposed to hoarding for a tribe. We are all in the world together, and I believe their are enough resources for all people if they are properly managed and distributed. As you say population management and control would be necessary too in the long run. Unplanned pregnancy is foolish and not fair to anyone, including the child as well as the parents.
