You can not leave an enemy strong point in your rear. Also, you always attack the strongest point you can at first....

Santa Anna could NOT leave an enemy strong point behind him, so he had the reduce the Alamo, before moving on. He was delayed long enough (Which was exactly what they set out to do at the Alamo for Sam Houston to raise and train enough Men, to whip Santa Anna's Butt at San Jacinto.
