Shill Maher

Shill, formerly known as Bill... Wait, how does "William" get abbreviated to "Bill", or to "Shill" in Maher's case? It's confusing, not transparent at all. Which is very appropriate, actually; we're talking about Shill Maher after all.

Discussing political allegiances is complicated too; the meaning of umbrella-definitions like "left", "right", "progressive" of "conservative" is always in motion and varies not only according to geographical, but also to temporal positioning. Within those, more robustly defined words like "socialism" and "capitalism" are bent to serve the general political alignment; I know, I'm guilty of that too on occasion, especially when discussing capitalism.

I need to keep it short today, so I'll get right to it: Bill Maher is shilling regime change in Venezuela. He aligns with Trump, just like Nancy Pelosi, when it suits the needs of his corporate masters. This is nothing new, at least not for you, dear reader, I'm sure, but Bill deserves a special mention for the way he does it. Maybe he's trying to be funny, he is a comedian first after all, but if that's the case, the punchline eludes me.

I only just found this, because I haven't watched one of Shill's shows in years someone had to point this out to me; it's an interview he did with Ann Coulter, the darling of the Republicans. Shill Maher is a die hard Democrat and considers himself left wing, or left of center at the least, but in reality he's just another shill for the plutocracy. I's kind of amazing really, but in this interview he manages to make Ann Coulter look more of a lefty than himself.

This is two millionaires joking with each other about how Trump's promise to build a wall to stop illegal immigration from Mexicans, was all a big lie perpetuated by the corporate masters who's bidding they both do. And the amazing thing is, Ann Coulter actually represents the side of the common people in this discussion, AND the side of rationality. Really amazing. Ann explains how the plutocracy never wanted a wall because imported cheap labor is good for millionaires like herself and Maher; Trump not keeping that promise is an act of betrayal to the American working people in her mind, and Shill never calls her out on that. He can't, because what she says is basically right. Not the part where she actually wants a wall, and actually thinks this will work, but the rest is a truthful description of the plutocracy's m.o.

Then Shill makes it worse toward the end of the interview, when he decides to drag Venezuela into the conversation...

"Today, Venezuela, this is on the front-page of the New York Times, Venezuela, okay? They have a guy, an opposition leader who finally stood up, and we are backing him. And Russia warned us to back off... Because they are backing the dictator. This was the Monroe doctrine! This is OUR backyard, and Russia is now telling US to back off off what goes on in Venezuela!? Because they know they can? Because they're so emboldened? That doesn't bother you? YOU'RE the patriot?"

There's just no counting how many things are said wrong here, and the scary part is that this little vaporous monologue disguised as a question was greeted with thunderous applause of the so-called left wing audience... So Shill accuses Ann of being pro Russia because she's pro-Trump. He accuses Maduro, the democratically elected leader of Venezuela, of being a dictator, and implies the same of Putin because, hey, dictators support each-other, don't they? He calls Venezuela HIS backyard, as if he owns it, just like his corporate masters. He neglects to mention that the opposition in Venezuela tried to disrupt the elections, not Maduro. It was actually Ann Coulter who had to remind Shill of the millions spent by Clinton to find dirt on Trump in Russia, exposing Hilary for the elitist she is. And how he starts with "this is on the front-page of the New York Times", as if that were some kind of truth-assurance...

Years ago I used to like this man, or the persona he exposed through his television presence, but no more. Shill has been a millionaire for decades now and this clearly affected his ability to think critically. At the very end of the interview Shill and Ann exchange some pleasantries and even promise to call each other later; they're bestest friends and this was all a performance to keep the sheeple asleep. Again I must say: this would be funny if it weren't so awful... Watch it yourself, it's a mere ten minutes long, a genuine marathon and very in-depth for mainstream standards...
