KINDNESS RETURN

I experienced childhood in Queens County. There were just a single or two dark children in the school when I was around six years of age. I got to know one of them, Robert White. Alternate moms were "Put out" on the grounds that I was partner with him yet fortunately my mom disregarded them. I overlook what unfolded in this manner; he most likely exchanged to another school and I may have seen him calmly on more than one occasion in the succeeding years.

Quick forward now to January, 1994 when I was 16 and had recently moved on from a City, all-young men grant secondary school in Brooklyn. I was excessively youthful, making it impossible to join the Navy...had to hold up until the point that I was 17. So I went to Queens College, a part of CCNY in the close-by town of Flushing.

A companion and I would stroll from our neighborhood to Jackson Ave. (in this way Northern Blvd) in Corona to get a transport to Flushing. We needed to stroll through an overwhelmingly dark neighborhood. At the time, there was racial difficulty in that locale and a white kid had his eye gouged out.

At some point, as my companion Bob and I moved toward Jackson Ave., we were gone up against by three dark young men about our age. The two gatherings quit, confronting each other, and the quarrel was over to start when one of the dark young men took a gander at me and stated, "Hughie? Hughie Horning?" I looked at him and stated, "Robert? Robert White?" We both grinned and he said to his mates, "Disregard them, he's my companion." We shook hands and Bob and I went fortunately on our way.

I couldn't resist thinking later how a "thoughtfulness" to a little dark kid was returned 10 years after the fact to a youthful white kid.
