A moment of silence for net neutrality in the US please

in #internet6 years ago

"The FCC just gave Big Telecom an early Christmas present, by giving internet service providers yet another way to put corporate profits over consumers,"

  • New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman

Well since the early days of the internet all data has been considered equal.

There was no banning or blocking of sites and "fast" and "slow" lanes for predefined traffic was banned.

All that is about to change in the US.

Is this the first brick in the equivalent of the great firewall of China?

There are arguments on both sides, the pro neutrality camp argues that ISP's would want to block or slow down competitors offerings. The anti camp argue that specialised services like video conferencing, telemedicine and connected vehicles need fast lanes.

The new plan that was adopted yesterday could kill the open internet as we know it.

The newly empowered ISP's have committed to not abuse their newfound position of power by that remains to be seen. With competitive advantage and hence monetary incentives in place I do not hold much hope that this goodwill will last long.

One of the biggest fears is that innovation will be dampened as new startups are more likely to feel more of the pain from unequal billing than the likes of the already established players.

lucky me for not living in the US

If we the people won't join together and fight this, our future will be controlled as we are characters in a video game.

This is just a way for the big corporations to make more money. I hope that the EU (or any other place on earth) doesn't follow the lead on this case, although I think it would be nearly inpossible to get all the countries in the EU to agree to a change like this.

"The newly empowered ISP's have committed to not abuse their newfound position of power..." lol Why would they want the restrictions removed, if not to make more money? This scum cares about one thing, and one thing only - MONEY!! Oh, and absolute control.

You have a former Verizon asshole heading the FCC, and he already made a video mocking those that value(d) net neutrality, so that shows you what 'they' think about it - 'Cha-Ching'! All the way to the bank. This will also accelerate the censorship being planned by governments, and other groups.

I call bull ---- [Comment is not part of your Internet Package, please call Verizon and subscribe for $2.99 to update your package's conditions]

Any chance we could create something like a printernet? Private internet, hidden in printers around the world for the sake of the pun.

this isn't true yet .. is it happening already ?

Happened yesterday, 12/14/2017.
