A new ebola outbreak
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) must face the Ebola emergency again. It is the ninth time since the outbreak of the great epidemic, in 2014. The DRC seems to be the most affected African country, but the reason is not yet clear.

Under analysis there are bats, considered the main bearers of Ebola. Those working in the forests are exposed to the excrement and spittle of these potentially infected animals. Scientists are looking for the infected species from which this outbreak originated, but the task is not simple: the exact moment in which there was the transmission of the disease to humans is not known. Going back of a few months, it would be impossible to find to the group of bats at the origin of the problem.
Related to the first case there would also be the problem of deforestation, which increasingly helped the contact between humans and animals. Of 21 known cases, 17 were fatal. The harmful potential of this outbreak is not yet clear, but the authorities will certainly have to move quickly to cope with this new emergency
New simulation for dark energy
A new simulation shows that the amount of dark energy in the universe could take on values significantly different from those currently assumed, without this affect the possibility of the birth of stars.

If there were too much dark energy, the universe would expand too fast, the gases could not condense and give rise to galaxies and stars, and the universe would be incompatible with life as we know it. The new simulation partially removes the constraints present until now on the quantity of this energy. This has important implications for the need to hypothesize a multiverse, but it also poses the problem of why there is so little dark energy in our universe.

La Repubblica Democratica del Congo (RDC) deve affrontare di nuovo l’emergenza dell’ebola. È la nona volta dopo lo scoppio della grande epidemia del 2014. La RDC sembra essere il paese africano più colpito, ma il motivo non è ancora ben chiaro.

Sotto analisi ci sono i pipistrelli, ritenuti i principali portatori dell’Ebola. Chi lavor nelle foreste è esposto agli escrementi e alla saliva di questi animali, potenzialmente infetti. Gli scienziati stanno lavorando per cercare la specie infetta da cui è partito questo focolaio, ma il compito non è semplice: non è noto il periodo in cui è avvenuta la trasmissione della malattia all’uomo. Se dovesse risalire a qualche mese fa sarebbe impossibile risalire al gruppo di pipistrelli che ha dato il via a tutto.
Correlata alla prima causa ci sarebbe anche la questione della deforestazione, che favorisce sempre di più il contatto tra uomo e animali. Di 21 casi noti, 17 sono stati mortali. Ancora non sono chiare le potenzialità dannose di questo focolaio, ma certamente le autorità dovranno muoversi rapidamente per far fronte a questa nuova emergenza.
Nuova simulazione per l’energia oscura
Una nuova simulazione mostra che la quantità di energia oscura dell’universo potrebbe assumere valori significativamente diversi da quelli ipotizzati attualmente, senza che questo comprometta possibilità della nascita delle stelle.

La nuova simulazione rimuove dei vincoli fino ad ora presenti sulla quantità di questa energia. Questo ha importanti ricadute per quanto riguarda la necessità di ipotizzare un multiverso, ma pone anche il problema del perchè nel nostro universo ce ne sia così poca.

Come è facile immaginare, Wikipedia è attualmente una delle pagine più visitate del web. Sorprende, però, constatare che il numero di citazioni scientifiche riconducibili a indirizzo DOI sia addirittura più alto rispetto a quello delle riviste specializzate.
Gli articoli maggiormente citati riguardano l’astronomia e la genetica, ma scienza e tecnologia in generale restano in cima alla classifica.
