Honestly it has been a while since i have worked on cars, but there are some moments in time that will be burned into my mind forever... cross threading is one of those things that have that effect on me.

Cross Threading:

Cross-threading is usually caused by the fastener being applied at an angle to the proper position and being forced onto the bolt. The threads of a bolt or nut are designed to engage with the axis of each aligned, which allows the peaks and valleys of the threads to slide across each other.

I have become so versed in cross threading that i can tell when someone else is cross threading at a distance of 20 meters or more. It is quite an interesting phenomena and the sensation is one which can bring you to your knees as you realize the depth of proverbial poo poo you are when it happens. Granted, the degree may vary depending on where you happen to cross thread a bolt, but let me tell you its a horrible feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you realize you gotta tap a hole in a tight position on the side of the block !!!!

A quick indicator list

Indicators of cross threading starting :

  • The bolt/nut is visibly on an angle
  • The bolt/nut can be hard to turn
  • The bolt/nut is getting 'Hot"
  • Metal shavings are appearing

Indicators already cross threading :

  • The bolt/nut becomes "very" easy to turn suddenly
  • The bolt/nut has back and forth play
  • The bolt/nut is jammed
  • The bolt/nut spins but will not come off
  • The bolt/nut snaps off

I haven't cross threaded anything in a good number of years, but i most certainly had to deal with the repercussions of others actions and work on cars i have bought, also when friends have managed to cross thread bits on their cars. the answers and solutions are varied, however sometimes when dealing with these things "in the field" it can be best to just jam them on as tight as possible and limp the car to a workshop.

This is where the joke at the top of the page comes in, for some they are tightening the nut/bolt for the last time in a long time and they realize they are cross threading, and they think to themselves "meh, later me or someone else can deal with it" and just keep going.... cause cross threading is natures loctite.
