Kiel - and Wik harbour

in #kiel6 years ago (edited)

After going through the Kiel channel we visited Kiel. We arrived in the evening, and came just in the right time to watch the moon eclipse. I'd rather have experienced the moon out on the sea, but we spent a bit more time than expected. I did a quick check and found that the Wik harbour would be one of the better places to see the eclipse from. I wasn't the only one considering that - indeed it was actually a bit crowded on the entrance to the marina by people watching the eclipse. The moon was totally eclipsed when it was rising, and as it still was a bit of daylight it was very hard to see it at all in the beginning. I took no photos that evening - I don't have the equipment for taking photos in the night time.

Here is a picture from the next morning - our boat is standing in exactly the same location as where we had it a year ago. It can be pretty rough at the outside of the marina, but someone told us our boat was too wide for any of the places in the marina.

Right nearby there is this military base.

It's some kilometers to bike to the center of Kiel from Wik.

In Kiel we did some shopping (Karstad shopping centre plus the nearest supermarket) and some dining ... this restaurant trip got very expensive, not only because of the beer, cola and apple juice me and the children drunk, but also the drinking water - we paid more than 15 EUR just for drinking water! Someone is clearly profiting from the drought ...

Sort of a playground near the restaurant

We managed to spend a whole day just doing "a bit of shopping and dining" ... I think it's quite horrible. In the late evening we were considering if we should stay for another night or not - but after checking the forecast it seemed obvious - if we would hurry on we would be able to catch some really nice tailwind carrying us all the way to Copenhagen, if waiting then ... no wind or headwind all the way, as usual. So we left in the late night.

Quick harbour review: Wik is affordable, it's missing laundry facilities, but except for that it has "everything", and people are very friendly there. The toilets and showers are decent, and located in the club house. Harbour fee can be paid cash 24/7 through a mailbox system, and one gets a keycard when paying the harbour fee. One negative thing - there is a bit of a distance from the boat to the toilets, as one has to exit the harbour, go some 50 metres to the right and cross the road.

Kiel is a nice city in my opinion, must have been a good place to watch the eclipse even though it was a little crowded. And I must say it looks perfect to travel around in a boat this summer!

I watched the eclipse by Tyrifjorden with a dear friend. There was no other people there but some strangers had left a few very comfortable camping chairs at the beach we chose to see it from. That was very nice of them, and made it extra nice to see the eclipse while sitting on a "private" beach. 😊

Hope you enjoyed the eclipse scene. All the pictures are full of good quality. Thanks for sharing.
