In winter, there are no insects that have fallen into hibernation, have become completely inaccessible to birds, and berries and fruits remain under the snow cover. Birds can survive the cold because the body is covered with feathers that keep them warm. But with nutrition this season, the situation is different. There are birds that cannot do without human support at all - the so-called sedentary synanthropes. This definition means that birds live in a certain territory, which they adhere to as a place of residence and do not fly further than it. Pigeons, sparrows, and mallard ducks can be attributed to such "dependent" birds on human help.

But small birds that live in the forest area, such as woodpeckers, tits, jays, greenfinches, are more adapted to harsh conditions, but they also partially depend on human help, so they also need help at a difficult moment!

To feed the birds in winter, it must be done correctly! It is necessary to know what birds eat, what kind of food certain types of birds prefer.

A mixture with the addition of sunflower seeds can be considered a universal food. Bluebirds, nuthatches, woodpeckers and other birds that prefer grain will be happy to fly to the feeder, where seventy-five percent of the feed consists of sunflower seeds. These seeds are rich in vegetable fats, perfectly saturate birds in winter.

Sometimes top dressing is added to the feed, which contains calcium - eggshells, even plaster.

There are birds that prefer to fly to the feeder, where millet, oats, wheat grains, and rice will be left for them. Sparrows, goldfinches, and greenfinches will readily arrive at such a meal, and pigeons will be seen at such a feeder.

If there are pumpkin seeds, watermelon seeds (they should be pre-crushed and broken into small components), grass seeds (thistle, quinoa), then such food will readily appeal to bluebirds, nuthatches.
