Multilingualism Accelerator to Help Kids Learning a New Language

With all that migration going on in Europe many schools are overwhelmed by the sheer amount of kids who are struggling to acquire a new language. Of course, kids are clever and through their peer group they will learn the new language in a short time much better than their parents. Yet to get really good results at school they need some support, especially when new languages are added to their curriculum. Even many native kids have difficulties with language learning.

The latest EU supported Erasmus+ program currently is developing a special language project for children, called „Multilingualism Accelerator“. It will enable children to become more multilingual and trust their language skills. The special thing here is, that in lessons, not the target language is used but a model language. Everything is based on the idea that learning a language, in this case Esperanto, limited to only 200 morphemes, can promote the children's language skills and give additional benefits.
Some studies have shown that learning the model language Esperanto for one year will speed up the learning of successive languages. This is because Esperanto is very easy, has no exceptions and is logically built, which allows children to play with the language and easily understand the linguistic principles by demolishing and rebuilding words and phrases. Thus, more than other languages, it motivates them to learn through creating phrases independently.
The project aims to prepare teaching materials for first-level primary schools by the next year. It is based on the famous Zagreb method to teach Esperanto adapted to a younger audience. Involved are nine partners from five countries.
