Uv unwrapping, creating and applying displacement / normal maps to a model

in #learning6 years ago

As you can see i keep learning more 3d rendering / and detailing, down here you can tell that i kind of start to handle the way to make normal maps / sculpt maps and add them to a lower poly character, it allows for more details to be drawn on a lower poly model, here mostly muscle details / shadowing / scars / veins in the arms, some burnt scars on the torso too, and more subtle muscle definition too, some specular maps adds some extra detail on the lightning on the model too, i didn't go too crazy with it but it's a start :

Some shots at different angles of light touching the character :

with multiple source of light and other kind of setup with how light bounce on the texture

The tedious part is to unwrap the uv's of the model , but i suggest using a program called uvlayout 2 it's very very effective and fast for unwrapping :

Here is a special kind of displacement map you can use as a normal map but also as a specular level / glossiness map (multipurpose map generated with zbrush )

And what you barely ever use anymore if you make vectorial displacement map, but some other engines might only use normals like these :

That's whati've been doing these past 24 hours.

amazing how far you've come along in the past few months of playing around with 3D modeling, and I shouldn't be using the words "playing around" because we all can see how serious you take this :D! can't wait to see more of your progress

Thank you Cob, i'm surprised you still follow me as my blog is barely very consistent these past few weeks ( I share a lot of free game deals but with what i do on this blog i don't think it's so out there, even tho, i work so much on the side i sometime feel like my weird self progress is not allways worth making a blog post but i still try, i usually judge very harshly what i do, and even tho this 3D model and textures might look okay i see a lot of small problems everywhere and it's very very very far from being finished and to the quality standard i wish it to be, mainly because i learn everything by myself and don't have access to a teacher, usually you would learn much faster with someone used to this showing you how to do this or that more effectively. )

I drew all my life but i also am very attracted to 3D modeling and video games as i played sonic and mario games early in my childhood too, drawing characters and universe is very intertwined with my love for actually realising my visions in "reality" or at least, in virtual reality, i allways saw making 3D as a way to give life to my ideas, and i'm allways looking to improve in many areas ( drawing, modeling, texturing, animating etc... ) Alas, every single of these areas take a lot of time and i'm often overwhelmed by my own ambitions and find that i often progress too slowly to be good in every and each areas i truly want to be good at...

Seeing you progress in what youlove is truly inspiring!
Even as you say that your content is all over the place sometimes I'd blame steemit more than you, because is impossible to expect that you can only like one subject. It'd be great if you can organize your content in steemit, that way I know where to look for your comic updates or your 3D rendering or game updates. Hoever your account has a lot of value and you are worth following my friend :D.

Thank you very much Maximus, i didn't know it was in any way shape or form "inspiring" to follow me, i'm glad at least someone give me some kind of feedback, nor do i am ever satisfied with what i produce anyway, i allways find so much flaws that i often have to tell myself "fuck it it will be in this state, move on to something else or you'll be becoming crazy" the one thing i often lack is proper tools knowledge, or "how to" do this, or "how to" do that, knowing the right application / program to achieve this, or that kind of render. To organize content on steemit they should allow you to have some kind of deviant art sections pages where you compartimentalize posts by categories :/ You do a great job for the webcomics community yourself cob !

As i'm an artist at heart it's allways disheartening posting a lot of things and no one giving that kind of feedback but i also realise it's hard to give feedback on things that are more or less allways in a state of "wip" , at least for Steemdya ^^

Again, thank you Cob. See you soon !
