Rainwater Calls for Ending Cannabis Prohibition to Invigorate Struggling Economy
Governor Holcomb’s administration says that his unilateral executive orders to shut down Indiana’s economy has resulted in a major shortfall in tax revenue during the past three months. Neither Republican Governor Holcomb nor Dr. Woody Myers, the Democrat Party candidate for Governor, has presented any options to resolve the shortfall other than increasing existing taxes.
Donald Rainwater, Libertarian Party candidate for Governor of Indiana, has introduced an idea that not only has proven to be a winning strategy in other states but actually gives more freedom to the people of Indiana. His plan would legalize and decriminalize cannabis for industrial, medical, and recreational use.
Rainwater says that the incumbent Republican Governor should call a special session of the Indiana General Assembly to immediately decriminalize and legalize all forms of cannabis in Indiana. As has been shown in states like Colorado, and is becoming clear in the four states surrounding Indiana, ending the war on cannabis has become a very effective means of increasing sales tax revenues. This plan would increase tax revenue by keeping the sales taxes on cannabis sales in Indiana, instead of losing that revenue to the surrounding states. This would not only help to resolve Indiana’s tax revenue shortfall, but also be a significant benefit to the Hoosier economy by creating and expanding Hoosier agriculture and small business, as well as creating many new jobs during a period of record unemployment.
