If You Don’t Know What to Write About, Do Something Instead
After spending about an hour reading here and there, swimming in the depths of my own mind trying to find some inspiration to write a new post, I found myself staring a blank page instead. Lacking ideas to write about is never a good sign, whether you are a writer, a blogger or a simple Steemian.
There are days when I can bang out 3000 words in what it feels to be a blink of an eye. The research of the topic I’m interested in writing about is just as fun as the writing of the article itself and new chapters appear almost instantly.
Is it writer’s block or just lack of motivation?
Probably somewhere in between but who cares about the label anyway? What matters is the fact that words aren’t getting written, ideas aren’t being completed, and new ways of avoiding that slight feeling of failure soon appear. A sweet, long talk to your dog about the current economic system seems to be a good thing to do, right?
Funny thing, in one of those one-on-one talks with Juana, my border collie, I realized that waiting for ideas to come isn’t the way to get something done. Waiting for some inspiration to come feels a lot like watching the world pass by you; you find yourself putting up excuses and reassuring your mind, once more, that you will catch up later. The thing is, a muse isn’t a creature that lives in the closet and you can take out for a walk whenever you want
The so-called muse is inside our own brain.
It was then, after Juana licked my hand, that the realization finally hit me.
When we sit to write because we feel like we need to do so, it’s when we don’t get anything out. And Steemit’s rewarding system doesn’t make it easier for us either.
In a way, it has us all frying our brains out to write something new every day because, well, we are getting paid for it and not writing means no paycheck at the end of the week.
And if you give it enough thought, that’s probably the reason why so many wonderful writers and bloggers on this site aren't getting noticed. They choose to post what they are really proud of sharing with the community and not whatever shallow thing that crosses their minds.
by those written from a place of greed
If you don’t know what to write about, read what your fellow Steemians have been up to these past few days. Comment, encourage them to keep writing and let them know they are being read and that their content matters. Don’t think about the rewards, stop thinking your vote doesn’t matter because its value isn’t economically significant enough; your vote matters because you are supporting someone’s work, you are motivating someone to keep sharing their art, their thoughts, and ideas.
Stop writing for the sake of it, just because you want to earn a few bucks; give something to the community instead.
Feedback the people you think they deserve more attention, discover a few gems of your own and share them with your followers. Feel inspired by their ideas and lives, and then try to write a post yourself.
Things will be awfully easy by then.
If you don’t know what to write about, do something instead.
