Maybe they seemed to care less about how cool the tree was (and weren't exactly honoring it by building around it as you initially suspected) but cared more about how trendy and cool it made them look to have a tree growing in the house (again, as opposed to just really honoring and respecting the "cool"ness of the tree)?

Yay! That's it then. The dream is saying, without judgement, that you also have this trait as well. More than honoring yourself, your accomplishments, your body or your style as being a part of your authentic expression and therefore enjoying yourself as the unique and creative expression of who you are, you tend to value how you'll be received by others for "insert attribute here". Ideally (paintings have to do with ideals), you would honor yourself instead of concerning yourself about the opinions of others. That is not to say that we don't enjoy compliments or other people as well, but that no ones opinion of you should have power to influence how you present yourself. Easier said than done, I know.
