LG is looking at the rise of autonomous vehicle technologies as an opportunity to expand its electronics business, and it’s now working with mapping provider HERE to put together a telematics product aimed at self-driving vehicle applications. The joint solution will put LG’s telematics tech together with HERE’s location services and high-resolution maps to offer something automakers can use as a communications hub for both semi-autonomous and fully autonomous vehicle platforms.
LG’s no stranger to the world of telematics, including vehicle safety and entertainment offerings, having been an industry leader since 2013. But it’s looking forward to advanced ADAS and next-generation autonomous vehicle tech and partnering with HERE, which was acquired earlier this year by a carmaker consortium including Audi, BMW and Daimler, to transition in the direction that the industry is heading.
LG’s offering will incorporate communications tech including GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and mobile networks including the forthcoming 5G standard to help communicate data transmitted by other autonomous vehicles on the road and information systems to in-car navigation and technology centers. Stacking fused sensor data, crowdsourced info and existing telematics information will make up a key component of autonomous vehicle systems.

LG and Here, the company behind Here Maps, have partnered to combine LG's telematics technology and Here's location services to create a data communications hub for automated and fully autonomous cars. "To operate safely and efficiently, autonomous vehicles will need many kinds of robust data sources and powerful communication technologies", Moon Lee, VP of Here Technologies, said in a statement. LG has been the leader in the global telematics markets since 2013 and HERE is the leading provider of map data and location services powering over 100 million cars today.
While a vehicle gathers data from cameras, radars, lidars, and other sensors, LG's network communication technologies will send that data to HERE's HD Live Map system. LG will provide the technologies for cars to communicate all the various information, supporting GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and LG's engineers are also working on implementing 5G data transmission. The information is repeatedly analyzed and transmitted to the telematics systems of the self-driving vehicles to render a customized driving information.
LG has said that the HD Live Map technology is going to play a pivotal role in the joint solution that the companies offer to automakers. "With partners like HERE, LG can continue to advance the next generation of connected vehicle technologies to help prepare automakers for the self-driving era".
