Ready to de-clutter your home but feel a little overwhelmed with the daunting tasks of de-cluttering? If you really like the thought of being able to live in an organized home but don’t know where to start, this is the post for you.

It may seem like a small subject to some people and a very big subject to others but when you think minimizing; you may not expect that your home is a great place to start. Breaking down bigger tasks helps get you motivated to see the end results.

We have all been there and a lot of us still are, the amount of “stuff” we accumulate over time just gets moved around and relocated several times in our homes.
Sometimes it is a bit overwhelming for people to think that they have to de-clutter their entire home in one gigantic task. Then they just give up and put it off.

I am going to give you some tips to get your home de-cluttered a little at a time and over time you will have your new de-cluttered home and space that you couldn’t imagine seeing again.

The first hurdle to some people is knowing where to start. Well there are plenty of places that tell you to start in this room or that room. These are just suggestions and you can start in any room you like. Just make sure you are only working on one room at a time. This will make your de-cluttering a lot more manageable and less daunting of a task.

Before you start, get these supplies to use in your de-clutter arsenal:
Empty boxes- preferably small to medium
Sharpies
Packing tape- use only if needed
Totes with lids- in different colors
Trash bags- throw away trash as you are sorting

boxes.jpg

The empty boxes will be used for the things you will donate or sell, store for different seasons and use. The totes will be used for things you know you will be keeping. I will be using a bedroom as an example for the room to de-clutter and starting with a closet. You will move the final pieces from box 2 into your totes, (these should only be for your off season items or special occasion items)

1st Step- Line up 3 boxes, label them- box 1 donate, box 2 keep, box 3 use

2nd Step- Put one piece of clothing at a time into 1 of the 3 boxes

3rd Step- Box 1- Now that you have them all sorted, move the donate/sell boxes out of your bedroom so you will not think about them anymore while working on the other 2 boxes.

4th Step- Box 2- Your keep box- these should be items that you use during the off season (whatever season you are not in at the moment) or special occasions, go through these items and if there are some that you have not used in the past off season pull these out to go in the donate/sell box. The rest will go in your totes to store. Holiday wear; get rid of if you haven’t worn in the past year or two of Holidays.

5th Step- Box 3- Your use box- these should only be items that you think you use all the time. Go through these and decide what you think you use. Put these back in your closet with one exception, put them all on one side of your closet. If hanging clothes, I tie a piece of colored yarn onto the closet rod to make a divider. All of the clothes I think I wear all the time go on one side. After I have worn and washed it, I hang it on the other side of the yarn.

At the end of 2 months everything that is still on the starting side of the yarn gets donated. When it comes to items I have in drawers, I still use a piece of yarn as a divider.

Ok now you have more room in your closet. Resist the temptation to fill up the empty space at the moment. Empty space is not always a bad thing. You are not working on utilizing all storage space at this time. You are working on minimizing things that you do not need taking up precious space.

Repeat this for the rest of your room and remember to donate/sell the items in your donate/sell boxes. You could hold a yard sale or use any one of the online selling tools like declutter, letgo, offerup, craigslist, etc... or whichever method you like.

Working with only 3 boxes at a time makes the job seem like a smaller task and help keep you motivated more than if you just filled up the room with tons of boxes and tried to fill them all.
You may end up just filling all the boxes at once and storing them, which is not the goal of minimizing and de-cluttering.

So get started on your 3 box method of de-cluttering and onto your journey of minimizing your home for a happier you. You will love being able to find the things that you want a lot faster and easier. Saving you time to enjoy more important things.
