Will Decentralisation Help Centrism

in #life5 years ago

Hey Jessitically correct

The world we live in is a polarising one, due to the internet and the ability to interact with people of all works of life, experiences and opinions we're seeing opinions clash on regular occasions, its opinion warfare if you will. Tribalism has gotten us pretty fair but we've gotten to a point where it's starting to hold us back.

We hold on to perceptions shaped by the information we gather, the people around us, the regions we subscribe to, the cultures we are born into, the language we speak and more such influences. That shape our personality and affect the way we see the world. Using these so-called "traits" we begin to align ourselves with people who share similar traits, instead of people who share similar values.

We're all radicalised in some way, shape or form

We then get hyped up in these echo chambers thinking our view of the world is by far superior to anything anyone knew and anything opposing it is absolute insanity. While this was probably manageable before mass interconnectivity, now what we've become a global community it is anything but.

You only have to look as far as a Youtube video comment section or a Twitter thread to see each side gang up on one another and impose their view on the other with distinct moral superiority. This lack of understanding and indoctrinated tribalism has turned the internet into a polarising place.

But it doesn't have to be.

The internet is a massive waiting room

The internet has we use it today with all its billions of pages is still a pretty centralised system, most of the worlds internet usage revolves around Google and Facebook and they're a catch-all service. They're trying to be everything to everyone and in doing so created a platform for all sorts of clashes.

We've seen plenty of users start to find this repugnant and defect while the rest, I feel have some sort of sadistic masochistic tendency to want to scratch that outranges itch regularly. So log in, read a topic, pick your side and then pick your battle, that's the internet in a crux.

Left or right makes for a dead centre

In politics, centrism refers to the tendency to avoid political extremes by taking an ideologically intermediate position.

A centrist promotes moderate policies by finding a middle ground between the left and the right and downplays ideological appeals in favour of a pragmatic or “catchall” party platform, while some call them fence-sitters others see this as the voice of reason.

Decentralised internet

We all know that conversations are being manipulated by the current centralised internet and keeping users distracted while their data is harvested for profit.

The conversation is presented in certain ways to certain people due to algorithms and paid promotions and there is very little by way of organic reach of content. Users cannot make up their minds, be pragmatic or be on the fences when content is meant to push them to one side or another.

Which is why I think a decentralised internet is something the world desperately needs right now. To put the onus back on the user to curate their own content and not have it spoon-fed through them or rather plugged in like an Intravenous drip.

A decentralised internet is a centrists paradise, where they're allowed to hop in and out of conversations, tribes, sites and help them get a more holistic view of what's going on in the world or topics of interest to them.

Instead of being told what to think and sold what to do, a decentralised internet allows us to own what we do and say by controlling the information we consume.

I think a decentralised internet will be a rich breeding ground for centrism and who knows? Maybe the answer to all this outrage. The way I see it, these two polar opposites are pushing one another so far, they're both bastardised all the good values they claim to hold dear and it's more about outwitting and out shouting the other than actually coming to conclusions and solutions.
