The different Maundy Thursday and Good Friday show of faith activities in my country
Here in my country it makes it exciting for the "Holy Week" of the Catholic faith when it comes particularly when it comes to Thursday and Friday and they call it Maundy "Thursday" and "Good Friday". These particular days are quite I should say bizarrely celebrated by people with devotion of self-flagellating themselves either by carrying a "Cross" along with confidantes not to make their lives in that particular instance of carrying the cross but to actually support these devotees unlike in Roman times where the criminal or those that are sentenced to death are with Roman soldiers whom are there to escort the "criminal" and letting him/her carry the burden of the "big Stake or Cross" if you may, and then nail the condemned in the wooden cross and wait the nailed person to die which if they do not will put them into the final stage of crushing the bones of the legs below the knee called "crurifragium" if not poking their flanks of their body with something sharp like a spear used in battle or both, to essentially expedite death of the already half-dead individual nailed on the big wooden cross or stake.
What is for me to be "funny' is that the devotees which chose to "carry the cross" is that if they would be nailed on their crosses that they would use a big slender stainless steel nail soaked in rubbing alcohol before it is nailed unto their hands and sometimes feet altogether. The one that would do the nailing is careful not to hit the bone otherwise the said devotee will not be happy about it and they would have no choice but to be "carried" or go to the orthopedic to fix the bone. Nothing like that I think hasn't happened yet because these "occasions" are well-planned and well-coordinated by the devotees themselves. The popular devotees are receiving donations and financial support from their members and other people which is a driving force for them to do this rather "physical harm" to themselves but they are relatively care not to get complications as most of them does it (depending on the donations and amount) yearly and it is causing a spectacle to many people to have a look and see how it is being done especially for the young people who are more curious than most people and the ones that believe that this kind of practice is one of the best ways to show their faith to God from supporting the individual, walking to the event barefoot, and to endure the heat of the day as part of their devotion in showing or proving their faith although the Bible doesn't teach such practices and are alien to early Christians.
Maundy Thursday and Good Fridays of the Holy week is unique to our country because they include self-flagellants whom are different than the devotees of cross bearer whom are either nailed or not nailed to the cross. The ones that are not nailed is only showing their faith by walking barefoot carrying their crosses and these are true for their supporters which walk along side them with either not wearing a uniform or not while some others have still have to use foot protection otherwise the heat of the pavement in a sunny and humid day will cook their feet.
The self-flagellants would also appear in the said days, they are indeed a sight to behold because of their "bloody" way of showing their devotion which is to flagellate their own back with small cylindrical wooden logs attached to a whip which they use to bleed their backs after it is cut by one of the organizers with a small wooden flat paddle with razor blades embedded on its face. They use that device to cut the back of the self-flagellant devotees to start the bleeding process. The self-flagellants would then unceasingly whip it on their way to the stations which are in front of churches on the way. If the flagellant's back stopped bleeding along the way, it will again tapped with that bladed paddle. The self-flagellant's identity is almost anonymous because their full heads are covered with their t-shirts, all wear long trousers like jeans plus they are all barefoot which adds pain when they eventually walk along with others while some other self-flagellant devotees comes individually or with their own small groups.
When I am still able to walk by myself, I would go outside after hearing them coming which you will know by the sound they create, the clanking cadence of the whip is quite terrifying to hear because you know, for every beat means pain although I know that after beating for a while, the back will eventually not feel pain anymore but will just be more susceptible to infecting themselves or the other with blood-borne diseases. Self-flagellating usually occurs more on "Good Friday" more than "Maundy Thursday" and I have yet to see if the number of self-flagellants would dwindle in numbers this year because many people are now beginning to understand that the "religious" practice of "devotion" is not really taught in the Bible nor taught by the Lord Jesus Christ whom teaches love and sacrifice all-year 'round.
