New Home. New Cabinets... Kinda.

We Are Officially Homeowners!

My wife and I just bought our first house recently. And with a 2 year old and another baby due in a couple weeks, we had a lot of work to cram into a very short period of time. This little 2br townhome needed a lot of work to make it a home.

Oh, the joys of being a homeowner!

One of the first things on our list - Cabinets!

Rather than spend a few grand on new cabinetry, we decided to paint the originals. We purchased a Rust-Oleum cabinet transformation kit for a little over $70 and I got to work.

Wow... There are a ton of F$¢¥ing cabinets in this house!

Here's the prep and first/second allocation of the bond coat.

But the color is a bit too plain. So now for the Glaze!

After the first coat of glaze, I sanded everything down lightly with a 220 grit sanding block. I didn't understand how dark the glaze was and that it is basically a thinner version of paint. I ended up with extremely deep uneven strokes showing. However, after the sanding (pictured below) and a re-glazing (yes... ALL of them) we were good to go!

Then it was time to add the hardware!

The finished product!

All together, it took an extremely long time. I had to stop halfway through so our contractor could do some work in the house (pictures coming soon). Also, the reapplication of the decorative glaze added an additional 8hr dry time. Overall, saved a ton of money but paid in blood, sweat, and tears. But hey, at least I can always say I did them!
