Nando's distances itself from claim Tories could offer members a discount

Nando's has distanced itself from suggestions the Conservatives could offer party members a discount at the chain's restaurants.

The idea was reportedly being considered by Tory chiefs as part of a bid to boost membership numbers.

A "senior party source" was quoted as telling The Times that the prospect of a discount card for money off at restaurants and shops was a "very real possibility", with its report mentioning Nando's.

"These are early discussions: we don't know how many businesses would want to take part, but we're keen to give members more in return for their membership," the source told the newspaper.

However, Nando's has poured cold water on suggestions it could link up with the Tories.

A spokesperson told Sky News: "Nando's has no political affiliations as a brand and no political discount card exists.

"We have a Nando's loyalty card and standard gift cards that anyone can use, and we offer a 20% discount to Police, Fire Services, Ambulance service and NHS staff."

According to the latest party figures, the Conservative Party has 124,000 members.

This lags well behind Jeremy Corbyn's Labour, with the opposition boasting more than 550,000 members.

There are fears this disparity in numbers could hurt the Tories when it comes to fighting the next general election, with the worry that a lack of boots on the ground could damage the party in marginal constituencies.

A Conservative source recently told Sky News that many local associations effectively exist "on paper only".
