The child's heel

(La paradura del niño)

As strange as this headline may seem to you at this time of year, I'm going to tell you how long Christmas is celebrated in Venezuela.
Have you ever wondered why in many houses they keep nativity scenes, trees and lights until February 2nd?
Stay reading a little and you'll know...
We all know that since December 24th the Easter holidays are celebrated in our country, nothing more and nothing less than the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the son of God. We all celebrate and share in family, friends and acquaintances. In theory it should be a time to reflect and meditate on all the blessings that the universe has given us, good health, for your children (if you have them), your girlfriend or boyfriend, wife or husband, or your worst is nothing, hahaha.
Seriously speaking, to thank God for everything.

At this time we hear many bagpipes, parrandas and aguinaldos and when the month of January comes almost like we turn off the Christmas switch and forget about the celebration, and the music of this time. But...Did you know that we can still celebrate Christmas? Yes, we can. Now I'll tell you why. It turns out that in several Andean states of Venezuela there is a tradition called La paradura del Niño,

I will clarify a point, here I am not talking about religions, I am just describing this beautiful Venezuelan tradition, respecting the beliefs of each one.
The Virgin of Candelaria
Another of the traditions celebrated in Venezuela is Candelaria Day, on February 2 of each year the Marian devotees join this tradition.

The Christmas cycle culminates with these two traditions, The Stop of the Child Because Jesus Can Walk and
with the Dance of the vassals of La
Candelaria, in La Parroquia and Mesa Bolívar, Mérida.

It is the dance of men, whose clothing recalls the
used in the French court of Louis XV.

But why does Christmas end on this date?

When Jesus was about 11 or 12 years old he was with his parents Mary and Joseph in the temple of the city and in a little carelessness they were lost, a few tortuous minutes passed until they found him talking with some priests.
It is for this reason that the Paradura of the child is celebrated, because Jesus was already walking on his own, he was lost and they found him on February 2nd. In addition to that event, this day was the apparition of the Virgin of La Candelaria.
