Making decisions: the start of a life change

We all have moments in our life when we think about making changes to our lives. Furthermore, when we discuss change, we mean a significant shift rather than just a new hairstyle. Now is the moment to decide.

In fact, there are situations that make us reflect on our personal circumstances, particularly if we are dissatisfied with our life's journey: enduring serious illness or accident, losing a loved one, etc. But extraordinary events don't necessarily require them to occur.

Based on their level of personal fulfilment, a lot of people may wonder where their life is headed at any given time. Examples include unfulfilled personal projects, dreams that stall, decision-making moments in interpersonal relationships, and career adventures.

We frequently experience uneasiness, fear, discomfort, and worry when faced with an existential crisis or a turning point. Reversing a crisis is feasible, no matter what it is.

The word "crisis" also refers to opportunity in Japanese. While going through such a period is obviously not enjoyable, a crisis might provide the motivation you need to advance.

This is accurate, yet significant life transitions frequently require making choices and accepting the responsibility that goes along with them, including any potential negative or positive effects. And that is unsettling.

How can we determine whether we must make a significant decision?
To be able to distinguish between choices that will significantly affect our lives and those that won't, we must first learn how to view things in perspective.

There is a method for this that might assist you in determining which are pertinent. You'll be able to make less stressful judgements and feel less anxious when presented with bigger choices thanks to it. It facilitates introspection and helps you concentrate on your true desires.

This is the "10-10-10 formula" that journalist and author Suzy Welch is promoting. You will need a pen and paper for this, preferably so that the reflection is written down. Try to answer a few questions honestly during a peaceful period (remember that no one will see this document, so feel free to express yourself however you feel).

She says, "I ask myself these three questions whenever I find myself in a situation where there isn't a solution that pleases everyone: what will the implications of my decision be in ten minutes, ten months, and ten years?

Consider, for instance, that you are thinking about starting your own business and that one possible course of action would be to resign your job:

After ten minutes, how do you believe this choice was made?
What are the expected advantages and disadvantages?
What will ten months from now be?
And after ten years?

You might respond by saying, for instance, that you experience terror and liberty for the first ten minutes, worry for the next ten months, and pride for trying to realise your ambition ten years later.
