Holiday Throwbacks - Malaysia + Thailand (+ SBD Contest Answer REVEALED!)

Live Life Like Nobody is Watching!

Photos all taken on OLD iPhone, apologies.

WOW! Malaysia.... This is about a 5 year throwback so sorry if the stories aren't as in-depth, as the memories are slowly fading. You'll see why soon.

I went on a 5 week holiday with my best friend's family, back to their home town of Penang, Malaysia.

Upon arrival, I needed something greasy. Ever flown for 5+ hours and just crave the worst foods? Yeah, nah, yeah , nah? I DO! So we hit up the nearest Maccy D's (McDonald's). It's interesting because, McDonald's adjust their menus to be region specific. The McDonald's in Malaysia has no pork products and has a lot more fish range and also soups. They also have a lot more doubled options i.e. double McChicken, Mega Mac etc.

After polishing Maccas and having the instant regrets kick in, It was time to ditch the Western life and move into the Asian culture. What better way then to try some chicken feet soup. Although, probably my least enjoyable staple meal, it comes with most dishes at Hawker food locations.

Other great Hawker foods include: Chicken Clay Pot, Ta Kway Tiao, Batu Maung Satay, and for dessert, Ice Kacang.

We arrived at their family home. A childhood memory for the boys, who now live in Adelaide, South Australia, and do their schooling/work here. Seeming that Malaysia is still a developing country, the house is quite luxurious. Three stories, a separate bedroom each and a fish pond later, we were all set and ready for the adventures that lay ahead.

Ps. It's only his finger

Party Time!

So what else can a bunch of 18-20 year old's do in their local town with their Ang Moh/Farang (slang for white-boy) and cheap alcohol? Well... go to the pub and make use of the cheap bevvies. A beer will cost you roughly the same amount as what bars offer in Australia as house-specials. However, buy yourself a $30 tower and feed the whole family. Pour it yourself, or if you're a froth master, ask one of the friendly bar staff to do it for you. Then enjoy the tower for what it's worth!

A few of these later, and you'll be in your element

This is where it gets a bit faded... I wouldn't really recommend clubbing in Penang these days as the violence amongst youth has only gotten worse and the choice of weaponry is only spreading. However, being 5 years ago and with locals, I was feeling a bit safer than being a random on my own. Let the party continue!

The last photo sums up the memory bank well

Refreshment Time

We took a break from partying to go down to Batu Ferringhi which is a beach resort area on the Penang island. We visited their family friends hotel and partook in some resort activities, mainly chilling, eating and drinking again, post-hangover.

Swimming, water sports, and a whole lot of delicious foods!

Well That's Random...

Here's some photos of some 'random' or unusual moments I came across whilst vacating.

  1. What is Occ. Health and Safety? Workers on the brink of falling on the job.
  2. Using window space as storage.
  3. Cows at the bus stop... (sorry hard to see)
  4. No sitting on the toilet (at Karaoke and many other places)
  5. Little cars 'done up' with customs and crazy rim patterns.
  6. Security in the mall with shotguns.

What Else Did We Do?

We hired out a boat to go for a cruise and do a bit of fishing. This was towed in/out by advanced machinery also known as a bobcat. We went out quite far and I went out on an adventure to find Wilson (Castaway reference).

Wilson! I'm sorry!

Getting Sick Of Each Other Yet? YEP!

Tempting to pull the pepper-spray trigger on a sleeping brother ;)

The pepper-spray actually comes in handy. Besides criminals, we took on a challenge to walk up Penang Hill. This two hour sweatathon was filled with wildlife and some crazy monkeys. Not saying I want to hurt animals, but when a monkey knows how to pick-pocket and may hold you hostage with a knife, I'm going to use some form of self-defense. Luckily, no monkeys or people were hurt on this adventure (would recommend carrying).

I see you scheming there Señor Monkey.

Play Hard, Work Harder!

That's right, It's not always fun and games. Sometimes it's time to put the sober foot down and take some time off partying to learn how to excel at something else. I took on two weeks of work experience at the father's business. This gave me a great opportunity to learn from bottom-up and partake in nearly all the current projects. I am forever grateful and even received a formal certificate of completion.

Time for Thailand + SBD Contest Winner Revelead!

The boys are off to Thailand! We set out for a 45 minute flight from Penang to Phuket to delve into the Thailand lifestyle for a week.

Kids hanging off the back of buses and a random pin-up poster
It was filled with fun adventures, more drinking + partying (when in Thailand) and some nice island tours. Some adventures include go-karting and quad-biking. I strongly recommend taking caution where you partake in these activities and ensure the safety of the equipment. Some people pull the dirty and leave you with loose screws so when you break it, you pay for it. If this is not your cup of tea, how about a relaxing Phi Phi island tour? You will visit a few different islands including the famous James Bond Island with the needle formed limestone rock which featured in the Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun.

Check out that view!

James Bond Island at its finest

And the Winner Is...

It's time to reveal the winner from my O OH! Guess what happened here competition to win 1 SBD.

Some responses were drunken disorderly, bucks night shinanigans, typical thai massage and not having a ticket to enter!

And the correct answer is...

It was all fun and games... I was RESPONSIBLE on my holiday. Kind of wishing it was something more extreme now that i've held the suspense.. @timmm came in first with the correct answer. Congratulations. I will send your prize shortly. @o07life also snapped up the correct answer but unfortunately replied a little later. I will give you 0.5 SBD as a consolation prize :D

I would love to hear some stories / see some posts about your trips to Malaysia and/or Thailand. Feel free to ask any more questions about my experiences. This was trying to be a 'brief' summary, whilst I still have some pics and stories I'll save them for a gloomy day.
