Cider Time! Apple Picking in Hector NY
When we were driving back from our last hike to the falls and devil's wall we ran across some apple trees with fruit still hanging.
My husband's uncle had just completed a homemade press, so the timing was perfect and we headed out again, this time with the addition of our son and the end goal of Cider in mind.
(No, it wasn't summer weather even though my son seemed to think so)
(Wasn't quite bundled up in a hood weather either though my husband seemed to think so.)
It's a beautiful path but travelling it is a bit of an obstacle course, a game we call "Dodge the Doo Doo" as cow pies are everywhere-
-which is why I like to duck through an alternative route for part of the journey.
Now where'd they go...
I'm a coming!
Our first score!
Looking good...kind of high though...Ethan come hither!
That's the ticket, let it rain (but move out of the way first, ouch).
Now this looks like something out of Brother's Grimm.
Contrasting attire, makes me giggle.
Which way do we go?
Private...probably better not.
Tee Dum Tee Dee...
... a foddily dim dee day.
The sun'll come out
and shine down on some rose hips (the accessory fruit of the rose plant,) which are rich in vitamin c and can be used for herbal teas, jam, jelly, syrup, and wine.
Score again!
G-nuff, let's go
Whoops! This occurred when the back hatch decided not to stay up and landed on..okay I was going to say his head but that would be a lie, it was my head which caused me to jerk back and knock the bag out of his hands hahaha!
I know, they don't look very pretty up close, but in cider they will be excellent.
On the road again..
...with a quick stop to pick Autumn Olives.
If you've never tried these you're missing out- with a sweet and tart flavor they're good to eat right off the branch and apparently also make great jellies and jams.
As I put the finishing touches on this post I'm looking out the window at the end of fall. Yep, it's snowing out there, sigh, well at least we got a fall this year :)

I've never heard of autumn olives, I guess we don't have those down here. I expected to find them in my old Euell Gibbons book 'Stalking the Wild Asparagus' but maybe he knows them by a different name.
I looked them up, and they're actually native to Asia but were brought here and have taken over the northeast- they're really good! But you have to catch them at just the right time :)
Oh so that's what a Rose Hip looks like! I've only ever seen it in its pharmaceutical form haha! The contrasting attire made me guffaw haha! It's like a before and after pic!
Snowing? Sounds like you're already into winter, while we're barely into spring.
I know people like Ethan who will dress like that whatever the season, but it doesn't get quite so cold here XD
Enjoy your cider :D
Lots of awesome apples to choose from time to be healthy and awesome :)
Snowing, so soon? Hot damn!!!
The cider will help you through it ;0)
