For a long time, I have identified that iodine and selenium were to chemicals which tended to be deficient in my diet. I occasionally use an iodine skin patch test. While it isn't the best measurement , it does provide a rough indication if I need to increase my iodine intake. Selenium is problematic in North America because it isn't necessarily available as a trace element in all areas. This means that most people might be deficient.

While I am unaware of any easy test for it, eating foods such as Brazil nuts occasionally is sufficient to supplement any shortfalls. Care must be taken not to overdose on selenium.

When the subject is fluoride - why am I talking about iodine? Fluoride is introduced into water in three different forms: Sodium fluoride, Fluorosilicic acid, and Sodium fluorosilicate. It is also found in higher concentrations in tea. One of the minerals which helps remove fluoride is iodine. In other words fluoride depletes the level of iodine in your body. This in turn reduces the effectiveness of the thyroid to protect your body and could lead to hypothyroidism.

I have a question about how your friend contracted Hepatitis C. It is normally contracted by blood to blood transference. Is it possible that the initial test gave a false positive (your friend actually didn't have it and the test results were wrong) or is it possible that the infection was so slight that the body's natural defences were able to beat it. The final condition is a little worrisome. There is something called an occult infection. It might appear to have been cleared but the virus remains. While it might have little ill effects, it might be part of a progression of Hepatocellular carcinoma.

One idea is to suggest to your friend to investigate intermittent fasting and a ketogenic diet (going no carbohydrate)

Hepatitis C viraemia is carbohydrate-dependent because the virus piggy-backs on triglyceride assembly and VLDL exocytosis. This makes a very low carbohydrate diet an effective way to control HCV viraemia, HCV-associated autoimmune syndromes, and steatosis. HCV cell entry is via LDL-receptor complex, therefore diets intended to lower LDL via upregulation of the LDL-receptor by restricting saturated fat and increasing polyunsaturated fat will increase hepatocellular infection.Source

"increasing polyunsaturated fat will increase hepatocellular infection" suggests that it would be wiser to substitute fats such as coconut oil (a saturated fat).
