Some decades ago, voracious reading was the order of the day. Reading was given it's pride of place. In fact, it made room for keen competitions, culminating in the award of scholarships.

Students in school and colleges aimed at achieving the completion of the reading of given number of books. It was actually all fun.

But today, what we see is a different ball game. The situation has changed altogether. It is generally believed that the reading culture is completely lacking, fast dying out, gradually disappearing, sliding or at least becoming very poor in the present generation. Majority of today's students love to pre-occupy their minds with non-academic activities. Reading has become a perfunctory exercise and no longer for pleasure. It is often embarked upon purely for the purpose of passing examinations. Reading as a habit should rather be extensive; beyond the class work or outside one's primary focus.

What factors are responsible for this decay in the reading culture?

There are quite a number of reasons but wrong values, strange lifestyles, sophistication as well as an individual's financial standing can readily be attributed to this serious decline in reading habit.

• Reading provides a person with a superior knowledge over that person who is not reading.
  He adopts a multidimensional approach to issues.
