Book Review: "The Encyclopedia of Dead Rock Stars: Heroin, Handguns and Ham Sandwiches"
The title says it all. So I'm browsing the music section of the bookstore reading about the "suicide" (murder) of Kurt Cobain, when I notice this intriguing book. The Encyclopedia of Dead Rock Stars lives up to it's name with true accounts about the tragic endings of some of the worlds most talented musicians. Author Jeremy Simmonds takes us on a journey throughout 768 pages of well-researched last days. After a short section beginning with the father of rock 'n' roll, Robert Johnson, we get to the meat of the book starting with radio DJ Alan Freed in 1965 to Amy Winehouse in 2011.
Find out what really happened to Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones and the eerie warning the year before his passing. Bluesman Robert Johnson not only planted the roots of rock 'n' roll, but he also became a founding member of the "27 club" with his strange demise at such a tender age. Like John Lennon in 1980, losing crucial members such as "Dimebag" Darrell of heavy metal band Pantera, robbed the world of a much-desired reunion. The deadly profession of Rapper is also covered with the loss of many bright lights in the 90's and beyond. Hopefully, we can learn to cherish the great ones while their still with us.
Organized by year, this massive second edition is one of those books where you can drop in and read about all the artists who died in say, 1971 for instance. Did 'Mama' Cass Elliot of The Mamas & the Papas really die choking on a ham sandwich? The answer is in there. Did Kurt Cobain really kill himself? Or was he helped into the afterlife by someone else? The Encyclopedia of Dead Rock Stars is a very informative and well-written book. Once you start reading it, you won't be able to stop. Highly recommended.
