RE: The Bad Guy In The Mirror...

in #life7 years ago

I had the most interesting conversation with a Sikh this morning. I asked him about his "faith" and it was extremely interesting.

I used faith in quotes because I was told that a Sikh believes that there is no religion. But that's just a side-comment that I wanted to get out of the way in case I may have inadvertently offended anyone.

Moving on.. and maybe getting to the point..

From what I learned today, Sikhism believes in looking inward. You need to effectively "fight the mind" and ignore all of the thoughts of this world in order to (in my words) achieve inner peace. There are 5 evils / demons that you need to defeat (forgive my ignorance of not recalling all 5), but I remember greed was one of them, and maybe lust.

All of the evils are inner demons. You need to understand yourself. Only once you rid yourself of these evils, through extensive meditation, can you achieve this sort of inner peace where you are one with "all creation" and become somewhat omniscient. At this point, you would be considered a guru. (Or another word that sounds very similar).

This post reminded me of this great conversation and learning experience that I had this morning. Thanks for sharing!

your welcome. and likewise. I really don't know much at all about Sikhism, so cool to get the Coles-notes rundown of your takeaways. must say there are still battles going on with those demons in myself... haha. :-)

Yeah, I didn't know much about it either, which is what prompted my question to him. I will need to take a deeper look into Sikhism at some point. While I don't foresee a change in my religious beliefs, It was all absolutely very interesting.

Oh, and I'm fighting all of the 5 demons! Haha
