„Wildlife in the Dominican Republic 🏝️ Country and people in the Dominican Republic

Hola mis Steemians

There is a species-rich animal world in the Dominican Republic, but also some things you certainly don't know, so let me surprise you.

I'd like to start the report with what I find the most interesting here - the whales off the Samana peninsula. Many vacationers come here just to see these gigantic sea creatures up close and personal. During this time (mid-January - mid-March) there are special trips to Samana - an experience you shouldn't miss if you are on holiday here during this time.

Humpback whales - faithful guests in the bay of Samana. Every year from mid-January to mid-March, the huge marine mammals migrate from their Arctic homeland during the mating season to the sheltered bay in the north-east of the Dominican Republic. To the delight of whale tourists and local tour guides, of course.

And animals that you simply have to accept here, because they occur everywhere are spiders, cockroaches and geckos, whereby the geckos are actually quite useful. I always keep a few here in our apartment, then I have fewer insects, especially mosquitoes...:-)

Spiders - there are in all sizes, up to the bird spider. Geckos in different colors and sizes, mostly they are very shy.

There are a lot of snakes here - from tiny to very small to the larger slim boa, which can be very large - but there are no poisonous snakes in the Dominican Republic. And I must honestly say, I have never seen one here before. The animals are extremely shy.

The only animal that is dangerous is the millipedes, which can grow up to 35 cm long and 2 cm wide. A bite from it is very painful and the bigger the animal is, the more dangerous the bite is (possibly get medical attention). The animals live underground under foliage, in the ground itself or sometimes under large stones - the more humid the area, the better the habitat for them. Dominican first aid for a bite: hot garlic wraps.

Furthermore there are a lot of insects, butterflies and other, partly very interesting animals. If you should make a trip to Largo Enriquillo, you can also experience iguanas, varans and crocodiles in the "wild".

For sure there is still a lot that I could show. This should only be a small outline. And by the way there are cats and dogs like sand at the sea... most of them wild living.
