You can definitely increase your freedom with small steps to start. People have different situations, some that allow for this, and some that don't right away.
The book is about lots of other stuff, so don't expect much more inspiration from it. "Live off the fatta the lan" just happened to be an ambitious quote from one of the characters that really connected with me.
