Howdy there folks and greetings from redneck country in the
great state of Texas. I know every area has a rich history so I
am not saying Texas is the best place(unlike a typical Texan)
but thought it would be fun to share some fun facts which my
wife found.

She is camera shy for some reason and doesn't want her photo
shown but she is real and here is a photo I took of her yesterday
doing some mowing. See she does exist and proves that I did at
least one smart thing in my life.

But anyway here goes with some interesting facts about Texas
which I found to be educational and unusual as well:

  • In Texas it is still a hanging offense to steal cattle

  • it is also a hanging offense to put graffiti on someone else's
    cow!

that's right boy you better cover your face, that's a hangin offense! (pinterest pic)

  • it's illegal to swear in front of a corpse in Texas and ALSO indecent
exposure in front of a corpse is illegal! I don't know why there would
be indecent exposure in front of a corpse but don't get caught changing
your clothes in front of one I reckon. I'm sure there's a perfectly good,
logical and righteous reasoning behind this law.

  • in Texas it's illegal to allow a Camel to run loose on the beach!

Camels were imported into Texas twice in the 1850s by the U.S. War
Department in the(brilliant) belief that they would be handy animals
to use during the Indian Wars. They could be seen roaming Texas hills
and deserts well into the 1920s.

From what I understand...the Army never got to use them camels
because they escaped along the beach and made it into the Hill
Country(central Texas).

  • The name 'Texas' came from the Caddo Indian word 'tayshas' meaning
“friends” or “allies”. The Spanish pronounced it as 'tejas' and the
English settlers pronounced it as Texas.

Incidently we live near Caddo Mills which was named after the Caddo
Indians. They weren't wiped out by settlers or the military, they are in
Oklahoma now on the Caddo Nation Reservation.

  • Texas owns all of it's own land. Most states have millions of acres
owned by the federal government but Texas refused to let that happen.

  • on March 6th, 1836 the Mexican army marched on the tiny outpost
known as The Alamo after a 13 day seige. The Alamo was defended
by just 187 men who fought to the death. About 600 Mexicans were
killed. Famed Frontiersman, hunter and explorer Davy Crockett was
among the defenders. He also served in Congress and when he retired
he was quoted as saying "you may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas."
(I think he actually said "Ya'll can go to hell")

The defeat rallied all Texans many of whom rushed to join the Texas
army and a decisive victory over the Mexican army occurred at the
Battle of San Jacinto in April of 1836 which ended the revolution.

  • The deadliest natural disaster in the U.S. was the Galveston hurricane
of 1900, which killed between 8,000-12,000 people.

In terms of lives lost, this was by far the deadliest natural disaster in
American History.

  • The Texas state capitol building, completed on May 16, 1888,
is the largest capitol of all state capitols in the nation in terms of
gross square footage. It is second in total size only to the National
Capital in D.C. They like things BIG in Texas.

  • The Texas Rangers are the oldest law enforcement agency in
    North America with statewide jurisdiction.
