As the images of the love and fun are seen floating over the cover pages of magazines and TV shows, for many people the holidays are not of much fun. With the stressful nights of December, poor health, drinking habits, the days full of cold, some people don’t feel the holiday season that brighter as it is felt by others. The negativity in moods and the sensations of depression start to prevail in the air for many people as the holidays start. And this is not only the clinical depression, it is the actual mental illness. As studies show that the rate of suicides and depression is highest in December than any other month of year.

But you may be wondering that what are those things which make the snowy December that much killing for some people, here are few along with the remedies to prevent them:

Having impractical expectations:

Everybody hopes for the perfect picture of Christmas and set up many unrealistic expectations, which when go unfulfilled, create depression. People develop huge anticipation while watching TV and start to fantasize a lot of things from there. but, the reality for these people is totally different and is often much disappointing.

Particularly the things related to their families, there are many expectations developed whole year and the real picture s completely opposite. If you have any conflict with your family or loved ones during holidays or you recently have developed some troubles with them, pressurizing them to tau along with you or remain cheerful can lead to more anxiety and trouble. Remain mindful of what you own and be thankful for it. Always remember that holidays will end and have some gratitude for the time you have got to spend with your family and friends. Enjoy it at its peak!

Struggling too much:

During holiday season, some people develop a pressure on themselves of completing many tasks in less time – however what they should do is plan a wonderful trip with your friends, go home and meet with family and relatives, set to an even – this can work like a tail spin for depressed people.

The raised amount of pressure on your brain and fear of not completing your tasks during these holidays are the main causes of triggering the holidays blues. Mani people feel disappointed because they think can’t do the things perfectly and suffocate themselves. Don’t do this with yourself!

Comparing yourself with others:

Life gets difficult when you start comparing yourself with others, either in real life or on social media platforms. If you think yourself lesser than anyone in your family due to any of the past event, or any of other reasons, you will end up being isolated and truly sad during your holidays. Done be a loner. Use some good guides to spend your holidays full of fun and joy. Stay away from the people who try make you feel bad about yourself.

The things which you make as the basis for the comparison with other people are not real. Everyone has his on way of living and sorts of problems which one faces, vary person to person.

Being lazy about self-care:

For most of the people, the holidays like the Christmas days is the busiest time of whole year. As the work load increases and your calendar becomes full of the commitments and much hectic – as compared to the normal days which are healthier containing the yoga class, morning walks, healthy diet and so on. along with the increased pressure of work, the poor diet and excessive drinking during holidays can become a vital cause of the issues like depression and anxiety.

You are the one responsible of your own health, take very good care of yourself. Take proper diet and avoid overdrinking and overeating. Do exercise on regular basis and every other thing which keeps you lively and happy. Whenever you start to feel down, know that life is worth more than being sad and happiness is all waiting for you.

The signs of seasonal affecting disorder:

Many people start to feel sad and gloomy as the winters approach at the end of year. Some develop a lot of negative feelings which remain throughout the holidays session and this may lead to SAD (Seasonal Affecting Disorder). To beat the winter blues, you are required to become positive about everything around you. If you think that you are suffering with SAD – which is also a kind of depression brought in by alteration of season – you need help! Talk to your doctor and get the best advice according to the symptoms you are facing and the treatment will work for you.

This is an important article. I have a beloved family member who suffers from depression, and yes, the holidays definitely exacerbate the problem. These are wise words, and everyone without the ideal holidays as portrayed by society can be vulnerable to very sad feelings, and I urge everyone to remember those who are depressed and to be compassionate.

I appreciate your comment. Share compassion with those hurting mentally or physically from lack of sustenance. Go out and volunteer your time, give to others, especially those you love.

Good tips.

In Nigeria this period, my country, people had to cut down on spending, most didn't travel home i.e their home town or villages (which is like the xmas culture here) due to inflation in transportation costs and bad economy. It is evident when you look around that people arent celebrating like they used to.

I won't be surprised if a large number of them are slipping into depression despites the festice season.

Let's help keep people spirits alive this period.

God bless Nigeria
