RE: How To Turn Obstacles Into Opportunities

in #life6 years ago

Whether something is an obstacle or an opportunity depends wholly on our perceptions. Any event can either be used to our advantage or disadvantage. We get to choose.

I used to think that certain situations really could be objectively terrible to the point that it couldn't be used to one's advantage. But then I read Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl, a holocaust survivor and psychiatrist. He explains in the book that some prisoners chose to use their experiences in the concentration camps to grow as people. Because their external situations were so horrible and could not be changed, they were able to change themselves mentally and spiritually into the people they wanted to be. People managed to turn obstacles into opportunities even during the holocaust.

If holocaust prisoners could use their situation to their advantage, what excuse do we have for feeling like we're victims of our environment?

I agree we get to choose.

I'm amazed by that book that you read, That some people were still capable to use such a horrible experience to grow! I love that example that you use. SO many of us take everything that we have for granted everyday.

A situation like that, Any feelings they had were justified. I can't even imagine the terror and horror those people experienced. So those people who still tried to grow and became who they wanted to be despite going through that are so incredible for doing so.
